Head of Grammar School (Pre-K–4)

Position Overview The Head of Grammar School (GS) serves as the instructional, spiritual, and administrative leader for Grades Pre‑K–4 at Oakwell Academy. This role advances the mission, vision, and values of our Classical, Christian, University‑Model® school by providing academic oversight, coaching teachers, cultivating student discipleship, partnering with parents, and ensuring the smooth daily operations of the Grammar School. \ The Head of Grammar School works collaboratively with the Head of School, Academic Coordinator, Administrative Team, and School of Logic & Rhetoric leadership to promote excellence in teaching, nurture a joyful culture of learning, and support families as co‑teachers in the University‑Model®.
Primary Responsibilities I. Academic Leadership Instructional Coaching & Teacher Support
Provide ongoing coaching, modeling, and support to Grammar School teachers consistent with classical pedagogy and Oakwell’s curriculum standards
Assist teachers in planning lessons and assessments aligned with curriculum maps and yearly learning goals
Observe classroom instruction regularly and provide timely, specific, action‑oriented feedback
Support differentiated instructional strategies to meet diverse student learning needs
Engage in co‑planning, co‑teaching, and follow‑up coaching cycles as needed
Mentor teachers in developing professional goals and growth plans
Participate in formal teacher evaluations and contribute to year‑end reviews
Provide recommendations for teacher placement and classroom assignments
Curriculum & Academic Alignment
Partner with the Academic Coordinator to ensure vertical and horizontal curriculum alignment
Support curriculum review, refinement, and selection processes
Contribute to standards mapping and academic planning across divisions
Participate in the development of Grammar School Team Leads
Review gradebooks, report cards, and assessments for alignment with school expectations
Assist in analyzing standardized assessment data to inform instructional decisions
Participate in Academic Team meetings to promote unity and clarity
Student Support
Partner with the Student Support Coordinator to approve academic accommodations
Ensure teachers and parents are equipped to support students with learning needs
Participate in admissions decisions, including family interviews, student assessments, and academic recommendations
Teacher & Parent Training
Collaborate with the Administrative Team to plan and deliver faculty training (start‑of‑year, mid‑year, in‑service days)
Provide training and support for Mentor Teachers and Team Leads
Coordinate cross‑classroom observations and facilitate reflective practice
Assist in planning and improving Co‑Teacher training for University‑Model® families
Help develop End‑of‑Year and Next‑Year planning processes for Grammar School faculty
II. Spiritual Leadership Student Discipleship & Formation
Cultivate relationships with Grammar School students through daily interaction and shepherding presence
Support teachers in fostering classroom cultures rooted in joy, order, and a love of learning
Address student concerns and guide students toward biblical conflict resolution and personal growth
Discipline & Student Support
Oversee student behavior and discipline in alignment with Oakwell Academy’s Disciplinary Response Protocols
Communicate consistently with parents regarding behavior concerns and restorative plans
Develop individualized or provisional behavior support plans when needed
Coach teachers on classroom management and cultivating peaceful, orderly learning environments
III. Organizational Leadership Faculty & Staff Oversight
Meet regularly with Grammar School faculty and staff to support, encourage, and problem‑solve
Assist the Head of School and HR with recruiting, interviewing, and onboarding teachers
Provide mentorship and oversight to Grammar School Team Leads and support staff
Help coordinate substitute coverage and step into classrooms as needed
Contribute to Faculty Development Days and staff meetings
Parent Partnership & Communication
Build strong, trust‑filled partnerships with parents as co‑teachers
Meet with parents to discuss student progress, concerns, and support plans
Participate in parent orientations, information sessions, and training events
Support the Admissions Team by participating in interviews and prospective family events
Help ensure clear, mission‑aligned communication between school and home
Operational Collaboration
Work with administrative leadership to support smooth daily operations, including schedules, supervision, safety protocols, and special events
Assist with the development and management of the Grammar School budget
Collaborate with the Security Response Team on campus safety procedures and drills
Maintain visible presence in classrooms, hallways, arrival and dismissal, and school events
Participate in leadership and academic team meetings

Skill in instructional coaching and classroom observation
Strong organizational and problem‑solving abilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment
Passion for shepherding teachers and cultivating joyful, orderly learning environments
Required Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Education or a related field
Minimum of 3 years teaching experience (classical, Christian, or University‑Model® preferred)
Experience mentoring or coaching teachers
Preferred Education & Experience
Master’s degree in Education or Educational Leadership
5+ years experience in classical, Christian, or University‑Model® education
Prior experience in school leadership, instructional coaching, or team leadership
Physical Demands
Ability to complete CPR and First Aid training and administer aid if needed
Schedule Notes While campus days are Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, some responsibilities will occur outside of those days.
