We provide individualized, direct patient care of assigned patients under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider. The Ophthalmic Tech assists in the delivery of health care services, supports the healthcare team, and maintains a positive working relationship with all staff.

Key Responsibilities

Enable clinic operations by managing patient flow in and out of exam rooms.

Retrieve and collate patient information for the provider.

Clean and maintain exam rooms, procedure rooms, instruments, and equipment.

Perform visual acuity, color vision, stereo vision, and other eye tests.

Pull patient’s contact lens records for optometrist review.

Clean, disinfect, and pack instruments for autoclaving.

Document patient information in the medical record per department guidelines.

Ensure future appointments are scheduled and referrals/pre‑authorizations initiated.

Adapt communication style to meet patient needs and maintain privacy.

Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent.

Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Ophthalmic Medical Technology or 2 years experience/Associate’s degree in Ophthalmic Assisting.

Experience working with ophthalmology examinations in a high‑patient‑volume department.

Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association. Preferred: Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) through JCAHPO.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Computer and telephone skills for data entry and retrieval.

Effective verbal and written communication.

Proficiency with Windows‑style applications and role‑specific software.

Good interpersonal skills; maintain confidential information.

Experience in a fast‑paced environment with minimal supervision.

Transcription accuracy and clarity.

Adherence to clinic and ophthalmic standards.

Ability to use equipment and perform tests: visual acuity, pupil evaluation, confrontational fields, color vision, stereo vision, tonometry, lensometry, keratometry, eye irrigation, refractometry, manual A‑scan, topography, brightness acuity testing, slit lamp examination.

Assist with contact lens removal and insertion.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Medium work involving occasional lifting of 20–50 pounds and frequent lifting of 10–25 pounds.

Regular standing, walking, and use of office equipment with minimal exposure to blood or body fluids.

No occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.
