Responsibilities

Serve as a senior attorney providing legal advice and counsel to boards and program areas within the Agency, including attending board meetings and hearings.

Research and stay knowledgeable on relevant legal issues and identify those that could impact the Agency.

Assist with researching the impacts of proposed legislation on licensing boards/commissions and other Agency programs.

Assist with drafting and implementing legislation that impacts Agency programs.

Assist with board and committee meeting materials and drafting a variety of legal advisory memoranda, policies, procedures, and communications.

Represent boards in appeals and in state or federal court, meetings, and special task forces and committees.

Minimum Qualifications

Juris doctor degree or its equivalent from an accredited law school and experience as a practicing attorney.

Member of the SC Bar.

Preferred Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years’ experience as a practicing attorney.

Completion of Rule 403 requirements.

Considerable knowledge of SC laws, Administrative Procedures Act, policies, standards and procedures of the AG’s office, general case, statutory and common law, judicial and quasi‑judicial procedures and rules of guidance.

Ability to interpret laws, analyze facts, evidence and legal instruments, express conclusions and arguments clearly and logically, and make presentations and prepare reports.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Other Requirements

Position functions primarily in an office environment with extended periods of sitting and standing.

May require work outside of normal Agency business hours.

Occasional weekend work and travel (local and overnight).

May be required to lift, carry, move and/or position objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

Daily filing, data entry, telephone and computer use.
