DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provides technical support for the troubleshooting, maintenance, design, and upgrading of electrical, instrumentation, and related hardware systems to ensure reliable, safe, and cost‑effective operations.
Diagnoses hardware and system failures by conducting technical analysis and root‑cause evaluations, and performs or coordinates necessary repairs, calibrations, replacements, and installations of electrical and instrumentation components.
Installs, configures, tests, and validates new hardware and system components to optimize performance and functionality.
Conducts preventive maintenance activities to support system reliability, compliance, and operational safety.
Ensures work areas and equipment meet established safety and cleanliness standards.
Maintains accurate technical documentation, including service records, logs, inspection reports, and system performance data.
Monitors assigned tasks and supports workflow prioritization to ensure timely completion of maintenance and installation activities.
Conducts field inspections to assess site conditions and determine appropriate hardware types, configurations, and placement for installation or upgrades.
WORKING CONDITIONS This position routinely requires lifting moderately heavy items (up to 40 pounds) and/or very long periods of walking on rough surfaces. It may also involve occasional minor discomforts from exposure to less‑than‑optimal temperature and air conditions.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS Requires an Associate's degree (two‑year program) in a computer science, instrumentation or electronics discipline or the equivalent, such as certification in a technical/specialty program of up to three years in duration.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Two years of experience in the design, installation, operation, and/or maintenance of a computerized data communications network or industrial control system are required.
Relevant experience (as described above) may be substituted for education on a year‑for‑year basis.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Depending upon area of specialty may require a valid class C Texas driver's license and compliance with the City of Houston's policy on driving. In the Public Works and Engineering Department, it may also require a valid class C or higher Texas Water or Wastewater Plant Operator's license.
Preference will be given to candidates with a current State of Texas or City of Houston Journeyman Electrical License, experience in maintenance of industrial electrical / instrumentation systems and Siemens PLC's.
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position.
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED None; however, the department may administer a skills assessment test.
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION Yes. If yes, this position is subject to random drug testing and, if a promotional position, the candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
PAY GRADE 21, SALARY INFORMATION Factors used in determining the salary offered include the candidate's qualifications as well as the pay rates of other employees in this classification.
