MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENTIST MLS-MT - CLINICAL LAB Salary Range: $28.83 - $41.80 per hour Schedule: Varied (all shifts), 8 hours Weekend requirement: Every other weekend FTE: Part‑time, 0.8 FTE Off‑premise on‑call: No Sign‑on bonus: Up to $4,000

Job Summary The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS‑MT) performs laboratory analysis, evaluates results, reports findings promptly and accurately, recognizes and resolves basic laboratory problems, supervises other laboratorians, and assists in maintaining laboratory systems.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or documented equivalent education and training per ASCP Board of Certification alternate routes.

ASCP certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Medical Technologist (MT) within 12 months of hire, or prior to 1/1/2004, certification as Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT). Candidates without valid certification must pass the required exam within three attempts during the first 12 months.

Preferred Qualifications

ASCP Certification as MLS at the time of hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of current clinical laboratory procedures and policies; understanding of laboratory test results and their correlation with physiologic conditions; knowledge of laboratory safety practices. Technical ability in hematology, chemistry, immunohematology and blood banking, microbiology, serology, coagulation, and urinalysis. Ability to organize work and meet deadlines, perform duties accurately and efficiently under stress, follow complex oral and written instructions, operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments, and maintain absolute accuracy in patient data.

Reading:

Intermediate – ability to read and interpret documents such as instruction manuals.

Writing:

Intermediate – ability to write routine reports, correspondence, or procedures.

Speaking:

Intermediate – ability to present information in one‑on‑one, small group situations or before groups.

Mathematical Skills:

Intermediate – ability to perform basic arithmetic, compute rates, percentages, and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Intermediate – application of common sense to carry out instructions and solve problems involving multiple variables.

Work Environment Typical noise level: Moderate (e.g., office with computers and printers, light traffic).

Working Conditions Regular exposure to risk of blood‑borne diseases, hazardous reagents, and occasional unpleasant patient elements. Exposure to hazards from electrical and mechanical equipment.
