Duties
Respond to emergency callouts within 1 hour during inclement weather, including all snow and ice conditions.
Perform routine manual tasks requiring medium to heavy physical effort and exposure to all kinds of weather conditions.
Operate plows during winter operations and obtain the required equipment certifications.
Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department’s response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 1
Must be 18 years old.
Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
Possess a Class D Driver License.
Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2
Must be 18 years old.
Pass physical/medical examination and drug test.
Possess a Class A or B Commercial Driver License with no air‑brake restriction.
Evaluate ability to operate a NYSDOT large dump truck within two weeks of appointment; failure results in termination.
Highway Maintenance Worker 1
Completion of Highway Maintenance Worker Traineeship 2 or one year of experience operating highway construction, maintenance equipment, or other vehicles with air‑brakes and GVWR > 26,000 kg with a Class A or B CDL with DOT‑specified endorsements.
Two NYSDOT equipment operation certifications plus heavy dump truck, one‑person plowing with single or double wing, and front‑end loader certifications.
Within the first two weeks of employment, applicant must satisfactorily complete NYSDOT Heavy Dump Certification or be terminated.
NOTE:
All candidates must pass a pre‑employment physical/medical examination and drug test before beginning employment. Cannabis use is not permitted. Candidates may be eligible to bypass the physical if they hold a valid CDL A or B with a current CDL medical certificate under two years old.
Salary Salary range: $48,855 – $58,743 annually.
Starting salary details:
Trainee 1: $48,855 (base $39,855 + $9,000 geographic differential).
Trainee 2: $51,058 (base $42,058 + $9,000 geographic differential).
Highway Maintenance Worker 1: $53,430 (base $44,430 + $9,000 geographic differential).
