Role Overview
The mechanical drafter is responsible for engineering custom units for production release.
Essential Functions
Maintain a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
Create necessary sheet metal drawings required for fabrication and assembly.
Produce dimensional and piping drawings for customers according to customer specifications; send finished drawing to applications engineer for review.
Determine components to be mounted on the base (compressor, chiller, condenser, etc.) and design structural/sheet metal bases accordingly.
Release sheet metal, base, and assembly drawings to production upon completion.
Work with sales to understand needs and create solutions.
Visit production-type areas where assistance in design questions or revisions is needed.
Attend meetings when requested to collaborate in a team environment to find solutions for problems and opportunities.
Work with all departments to obtain information.
Attend work as outlined in the Employee Handbook and/or specified by the supervisor.
Complete other tasks as directed by the supervisor.
Comply with government regulations, laws, company policies, and company procedures.
Desired Qualifications Education:
High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED).
Experience:
At least 2 years of experience in design and working with the AutoCAD program through work experience or higher education courses specific to designing.
Skills:
Ability to use Microsoft productivity software. Self‑motivated. Effective oral and written communication skills. Multi‑tasking abilities. Must have basic computer skills. Ability to read a tape measure down to 1/16 of an inch. Basic math skills are required and the employee must also have the ability to recognize basic angle measures (45°, 90°, 180°, 270°, 360°) along with recognizing and converting fraction & decimal equivalents.
Certificates, licenses or training:
On‑site training. Extensive training in CAD programs (SolidWorks/AutoCAD, etc.).
Interaction with Others Reports to the Director of Product Design. Must accurately receive and understand instructions from the supervisor to determine if further instruction is required before attempting to complete the task assigned. Constant communication with other departments (Sales, production, etc.) is essential. The employee should work with all members of the RAE team and demonstrate a spirit of cooperation.
Working Environment The job is conducted primarily in a climate‑controlled office setting, with occasional exposure to the manufacturing environment including moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level is usually quiet to moderate.

Physical Demands Physical demands include lifting/carrying, standing, walking, sitting, handling/fingering, reaching outward, reaching above shoulder, climbing, crawling, squatting or kneeling, bending, twisting, and pushing/pulling within specified weight ranges. Additional physical requirements: vision – near, sense of sound (audible voice), and ability to wear personal protective equipment (safety glasses).
