Key job responsibilities
Collaborate with experienced cross-disciplinary teams to develop, design, and bring to market innovative devices and services
Design and build innovative technologies in a large distributed computing environment and help guide fundamental changes in the industry
Create solutions to run predictions on distributed systems with exposure to advanced technologies at incredible scale and speed
Build distributed storage, index, and query systems that are scalable, fault‑tolerant, low cost, and easy to manage/use
Architect and oversee the development of advanced sensor and optoelectronic systems for Amazon Robotics. This role requires a seasoned engineer who can define system architectures, set technical direction, and make informed trade‑offs across electrical, mechanical, and software interfaces.
Own product development from concept through production, including requirements definition, design, prototyping, validation, DVT planning, and release to manufacturing. The engineer will design and analyze sensor modules, including optoelectronics packaging, PCBA layout, signal integrity, thermal considerations, and environmental/EMI compliance.
Guide cross‑functional technical choices, ensuring alignment across interdisciplinary teams, and providing structure in ambiguous problem spaces. The engineer will evaluate and integrate new sensing technologies, oversee characterization of internally developed and off‑the‑shelf sensors, and drive documentation such as functional specs, verification plans, and test procedures.
Mentor junior engineers, guide design reviews, manage external development partners, and communicate clearly with leadership through concise written and verbal updates. This role demands strong ownership, technical depth, and the ability to deliver results in fast‑paced environments.
A day in the life A Hardware Development Engineer III spends the day driving sensor and optoelectronic system architecture for Amazon Robotics. They lead technical discussions, clarify requirements, and make design selections across electrical, mechanical, and firmware teams. Hands‑on work includes evaluating prototypes, analyzing sensor data, and guiding packaging, PCBA, and thermal integration. The engineer collaborates with operations and vendors to ensure designs scale to production. They also mentor junior engineers, document requirements and test plans, and present concise technical updates to leadership. Internal robotics product teams rely on this role to deliver robust, high‑performance sensing solutions.

Experience in compute and storage server architecture and design for large‑scale applications
Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
Experience in server technologies such as thermal, mechanical, power, and signal integrity
Master’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent
Experience working with interdisciplinary teams to execute product design from concept to production
Experience with the project management of technical projects

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
