Overview Under the direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist, Supervisor, and/or Director of Pharmacy Services, performs a variety of technical and clerical duties to ensure all medication needs and regulatory compliance standards are met for our patients for the hospital-wide unit dose drug distribution system, intravenous admixture program, and outpatient pharmacy including retail and specialty pharmacy. Responsible to maintain confidential reports, enter and retrieve data utilizing the computer system, safely and accurately fill patient prescriptions, provide exceptional customer services, prepare intravenous medication, including but not limited to chemotherapeutic preparations, hyper‑alimentations and antibiotics, fill automated medication dispensing system with medications, procure and fill requests for pharmaceutical supplies and deliver supplies to nursing units, and inventory management.

Responsibilities

Pull medications for automated dispensing system printouts and machine re‑supply.

Fill patient medication envelopes with the correct medication from labels prior to each run.

Fill and deliver controlled substance orders to nursing units and ancillary departments according to policy and procedure.

Deliver checked medications to nursing units; refills automated dispensing system machines to prescribed par levels; report unusual occurrences to the pharmacists.

Restock nursing units, operating room, recovery room and ancillary departments with floor stock medications and supplies.

Maintain and restock individual filling stations and work areas, including all satellites while contributing to the maintenance of a fixed, minimal level of pharmacy inventory.

Reorder pharmacy supplies from the hospital warehouse.

Bill/credit patient medications using the computer charging system or the remote charging system.

Maintain pharmacy in a clean and organized fashion.

Generate reports and labels to compile and arrange a work list for the preparation of an adequate number of IV admixtures to cover a 24‑hour period.

Assemble materials for the preparation of the daily supply of IVs including medication labels, medications, solutions, syringes, needles and administration sets and other equipment necessary.

Label a predetermined supply of IV bags and syringes with the computer‑generated patient name and drug/dose label; ensure that all IVs are properly labeled with the information deemed necessary by the Intravenous Admixture Guidelines.

Routinely check expiration dates of medication in the Pharmacy Department and on the nursing units; rotate and recycle stock when needed.

Attend all required Safety Training programs and can describe responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety and specific job related hazards.

Follow the Hospital Exposure Control Plans/Bloodborne and Airborne Pathogens.

Essential Functions

Engage customers and patients to provide quality customer service.

Utilize pharmacy information system to correctly enter patient and drug information, filling prescriptions by retrieving, counting, and pouring medications.

Assist pharmacist in maintaining workflow.

Responsible and accountable for registering sales on cash register, collecting payment and reconciling payments.

Perform non‑sterile compounding and record‑keeping.

Update patient records including allergies, demographics, health, and insurance information.

Prepare prescriptions for shipping to patient.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.

Six to 12 months of pharmacy experience preferred.

Registration with the Board of Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician (Kentucky only) required.

Not eligible for work in West Virginia.
