Summary Description Of Work A person in recovery from a serious mental illness will hold this position. This fully integrated employee provides highly individualized services at the peer wellness and recovery center program and in the community, promoting client self‑determination and decision‑making. Peer specialists offer expertise and consultation to other professionals, facilitating a culture that respects each client’s perspective and preferences within treatment, rehabilitation and community self‑help activities. Excellent communication, decision‑making and interpersonal skills are critical.

Compensation Between $16.50 and $23.07 per hour, based on total years of relevant experience.

Work Schedule 37.5 hours per week (Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.).

Minimum Qualifications

A person living in recovery from a diagnosed behavioral health disorder

Completion of the Iowa Peer Workforce Collaborative Peer Support Specialist Training

Certified Peer Recovery Support (PRS) preferred

Wellness Recovery Action Planning training (WRAP) preferred

Two years paid or volunteer experience working with individuals with severe and persistent mental illness

Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Can speak to the experience of others with serious persistent mental illness (SPMI) and can provide support based on those experiences.

Engages clients in their own recovery journey.

Provides direct services to clients individually and in groups, teaching symptom‑management techniques, promoting personal growth and whole‑health wellness, and helping clients cope with stresses to move toward their goals.

Meets direct service standards and completes billing information in a timely manner.

Provides care coordination, offering direction to community resources and other needed supports.

Develops and maintains a welcoming, trauma‑informed atmosphere.

Organizes and leads individual and group social and recreational activities, increasing social experiences and practicing social skills.

Participates actively in case consultations and other discussions related to client needs as an active voice for program members.

Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.

Uses computer to document information, maintain a permanent record of client activity, and meet program procedures.

Assists in independent living skill development.

Supports clients in accessing primary care and other medical professionals, encouraging whole‑health wellness.

Encourages clients to plan and engage in leisure activities on evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Displays a courteous and caring attitude at all times toward clients, volunteers, and visitors.

Cooperates and collaborates with program area staff, volunteers, and other agency staff.

Is dependable and punctual regarding scheduling and attendance.

Abides by all specific program and agency procedures, policies, and requirements.

Develops personal and program‑related skills through participation in internal and external training opportunities.

Creates, maintains, and shares a dynamic self‑care plan.

Strives to build connections between the agency and the broader community to support fundraising and friend‑raising efforts.

Performs essential job functions on the company’s physical work site.

Performs other program‑related duties as assigned.
