Overview
Barnes‑Jewish Hospital (BJH) at Washington University Medical Center, the largest hospital in Missouri, is a full‑service laboratory operating 24/7. The Laboratory Services encompass Hematology, Immunology, Chemistry, Toxicology, Flow Cytometry, Cytology, Surgical Pathology, Microbiology, and Transfusion Medicine. BJH also operates a Histocompatibility Laboratory (HLA), a blood donor/pheresis service, a Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory, and a Bone Marrow/Stem Cell Preservation Laboratory.
Role Purpose The Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) II performs specimen processing and routine/complex testing on blood and other specimens. The role requires knowledge of quality control, basic instrument maintenance, procedural methodologies, and reference ranges. Maintains documentation of all activities as required and demonstrates good clinical laboratory practice.
Responsibilities
Operate instrumentation in assigned areas to deliver precise, timely, and accurate laboratory results.
Train new laboratory personnel in methods, procedures, and equipment specific to the assigned area.
Perform quality controls for all equipment and troubleshoot malfunctioning instrumentation as necessary. Assess technical or instrument problems, evaluate possible solutions, and choose an appropriate course of action.
Report and maintain records of patient test results through the laboratory computer system accurately, meeting published turnaround times for routine testing and stats.
Participate in performance improvement activities and initiatives by proactively diagnosing and resolving problems. Handle specific quality functions in an organized and timely fashion.
Minimum Requirements
Education:
Bachelor’s Degree in Physical/Life Science or related field.
Experience:
Supervisor experience or no experience.
Licenses & Certifications:
ASCP, AMT, AAB, or equivalent/eligible.
