Overview At Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, we deliver reliable water to regions serving 19 million people. In this role you will serve as the Associate Environmental Specialist, reporting directly to the Team Manager of Operational Regulatory Services and supporting water quality and environmental studies and projects.
Key Responsibilities
Prepare internal briefings, including memos, board letters and presentations.
Analyze and interpret water quality legislation and regulations, monitoring and summarizing pertinent legislative developments.
Develop proposed positions, evaluate their impact, and coordinate with regulatory agencies.
Plan, conduct, coordinate and monitor environmental studies and programs in accordance with federal and state environmental laws and regulations.
Develop plans and procedures for compliance with federal, state, local laws; prepare and review environmental documents and permit applications; oversee consultant work products.
Coordinate with stakeholder groups including Operations, Water Quality, External Affairs, Water Resources, Safety and Legal; represent Metropolitan at public meetings, workgroups and industry forums.
Act as a lead and coordinate work assignments of employees performing the same general work on a day‑to‑day basis.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Geography, Biology, Environmental Planning or related field and four years of relevant experience; or Master’s degree and two years of relevant experience.
Proficiency in state and federal regulations such as the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA), Clean Water Act (CWA) and California environmental regulations.
Experience preparing California Environmental Quality Act documents, technical reports, regulatory permit applications, construction/mitigation monitoring and project management.
Effective communication skills; ability to collaborate with cross‑functional teams.
Valid California Class C Driver’s License or equivalent required at time of application.

Hybrid: Two days a week in person and the other days remote. Hybrid schedule subject to change depending on organizational needs. Telework policy in effect upon completion and implementation.
