Position Overview United Health Service (UHS) seeks a phlebotomist to perform daily activities within the Support Services Department. The role includes rotational assignments within the institution and external off‑site coverage such as Skilled Nursing Facilities and Pre‑Admission Testing. Responsibilities include Test Order Entry, inpatient and outpatient venipuncture, stock rotation, and nursing home draws. For PAT coverage, the ability to perform EKGs is required. The phlebotomist interacts with patients and customers courteously and professionally, embracing service excellence.

Primary Work Shift Rotational.
Compensation Range $19.37 – $28.09 per hour, depending on experience.
Sign‑On Incentives Up to a $2,500 sign‑on bonus for eligible candidates; speak with a recruiter for details.
Job Responsibilities
Perform phlebotomy and specimen collection procedures, ensuring patient identification and compliance for inpatients and outpatients, including venipuncture, 24‑hr urine collection, random urine collection, H. pylori breath test, and glucose tolerance testing. Select appropriate venipuncture equipment based on patient age and specific requirements.
Enter test orders into the EHR, ensuring diagnosis codes meet medical necessity requirements. Acquire consent forms, prior authorization data, and ABNs when applicable.
Organize and prioritize workload for STAT and routine testing, managing timed draws within established guidelines.
When necessary, rotate as out‑patient department receptionist, attending to lab‑testing patients, prioritizing fasting patients and ensuring timely service.
Observe patients during procedures, detect any reactions, and notify physician or nurse if complications arise.
Execute downtime procedures when HIS or LIS is out of service and assist with system recovery.
Participate in continuing education and quality improvement programs; train new phlebotomists and technologists as requested.
Perform basic specimen processing, maintaining centrifugation and storage requirements until laboratory arrival.
Ensure accurate EHR requisitions, validate patient identification, fax numbers, insurance, and provider data.
Investigate specimen or requisition data gaps, acquire missing information, and recommend resolution steps.
Transport specimens from internal locations or wards promptly.
Transcribe external provider orders into the EHR. Additional descriptors include understanding specimen integrity, equipment types, additives, and biohazard disposal policies.
Send supplies to provider offices for laboratory testing.
Assist in training new employees and perform other related duties as required.
Position Qualification Minimum Required
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred
Completed Phlebotomy Training Program or equivalent training.
At least 3 months of phlebotomy experience in an acute care setting.
Knowledge of patient registration and lab test order entry.
Knowledge of laboratory specimen processing procedures.
