This job requires an outgoing, energetic personality. You determine the patient’s overall experience in our office. Your job requires attention to detail and accuracy. You are executing the treatment plan provided by the doctor. It is crucial that you listen to the doctor’s directions, perform the procedure correctly, and efficiently, and accurately document the patient’s chart. It is also important to be able to form a strong, positive relationship with each patient and work well with your fellow team members.

Duties The Orthodontic Assistant is responsible for assisting the orthodontist in clinical treatment of patients. The Orthodontic Assistant is also responsible for the cleanliness of the clinical area, sterilization of instruments, stocking all the clinical supplies, and regularly cleaning and maintaining the equipment.

Responsibilities

Cleaning and preparation of units/chairs before each patient.

Greet and seat patients, never leaving a seated patient unattended.

Anticipate and assist the orthodontist’s needs at all times.

Charting of patient procedures to include charges (if applicable), procedure and length of time for next visit.

Dismissal of patient and explanation of procedure to parent with review of progress.

Taking radiographs: panoramic, cephalometric

Placement and removal of separator

Utilizing intraoral scanner

Checking all patient appliances prior to adjustment or wire changes

Intraoral and extraoral photographs

Changing archwires or elastic ties

Working with Invisalign: submitting cases, placing attachments, delivering aligners

Adjustment of removable appliances

Banding and bonding procedures

Debanding/debonding procedures

Give patient instruction for cooperation and motivation

Documentation of all communication and procedures in patient chart

Fabrication, delivery, and fitting of retainers

Cleaning and replenishing of supplies

Preparing bracket setups

Perform other tasks as assigned by the orthodontist(s)

Education & Experience

High school diploma or GED

Radiology Certification

MA Dental Assistant License

Orthodontic Experience preferred but not required

Skills & Abilities

Good interpersonal skills to develop an effective relationship with patients, parents, doctors, and team members.

Typing skills for entries into patient charts.

Effective verbal skills to communicate with and educate patients and parents about treatment.
