St Jude Children's Research Hospital
Image Data Scientist in Center of Excellence for Structural Cell Biology
St Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, us, 37544
Job Description
The Image Data Scientist is responsible for analysis of biomedical imagery data produced from a variety of imaging techniques at St. Jude. Designs, develops, tests, maintains, evaluates, documents and operates image analysis computer programs. Works closely with researchers to understand analytical needs and provides technical consultation, designs image analysis approaches, generates reports and performs analyses and results evaluation. About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Imaging Scientist to join our multidisciplinary team in developing and applying cutting‑edge approaches for cryo‑electron tomography and cryo‑volume electron microscopy data analysis. The successful candidate will focus on image processing, segmentation, visualization and quantitative analysis of large 3D EM datasets to reveal (sub)cellular and molecular architecture underlying various biological processes. Working at the interface of cell biology, computational imaging and data science, this position offers a unique opportunity to contribute to discoveries that impact development of pediatric diseases. Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement automated and semi‑automated segmentation pipelines for volume EM datasets (FIB‑SEM and TEM tomography). Apply and adapt machine learning and deep learning techniques for feature detection, instance segmentation, and 3D reconstruction. Perform quantitative image analysis, including morphometric and spatial characterization of cellular and organellar structures. Manage large imaging datasets using high‑performance computing and scalable data workflows. Document and disseminate computational methods, contributing to open‑source tools and scientific publications. Support training and mentorship of staff and collaborators in image analysis workflows. Minimum Education and/or Training
Bachelor's degree in applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computer engineering or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Minimum Experience
Minimum Requirement: Bachelor's degree with 1+ years of work experience in relevant area (e.g., applied mathematics, physics, chemistry, bioinformatics, computer science, data science, computer engineering) required. Experience Exception: Master's degree with no experience. Experience in image analyses, image data management, and programming (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, Java, C/C++). Experience in image analysis platforms (e.g., ImageJ/Fiji, CellProfiler), scientific computing, scientific data visualization, scientific computer code optimization and evaluation in an HPC environment, development of algorithms, statistical methods or scientific software, working with large image data volumes, biological/medical imaging. Preferred Qualifications & Experience
PhD or equivalent degree in Structural Biology, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Cell Biology or a related field. Demonstrated expertise in 3D image processing and segmentation, ideally with electron microscopy or other large‑volume imaging modalities. Experience with alignment of correlated light and electron microscopy datasets. Experience with visualization tools such as Napari, ChimeraX, Blender, or similar. Experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow is a plus. Familiarity with large‑scale data management is advantageous. Strong problem‑solving skills. Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team. Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset. Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $78,000 – $139,360 per year for the role of Image Data Scientist in Center of Excellence for Structural Cell Biology. Equal Opportunity Employer
