Understands the importance of holding ourselves accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices;

Encourages positive race-consciousness and embraces human difference;

Supports institutional practices that both develop and sustain culturally responsive teaching and learning environments;

Strategically builds support for and participation in equity-related initiatives across both internal and external communities.

Responsibilities

Teach lecture and laboratory courses in geology as assigned.

Maintain equipment and instruments used in teaching geology.

Teach the principles and applications of geology.

Assist in the coordination and maintenance of laboratory facilities.

Participate in the accreditation process.

Serve on and attend department, college, and district committees as needed.

Participate in program review, student learning outcome development and assessment to improve student learning, curriculum development and revision, and support of adjunct faculty.

Develop and utilize classroom and online technology.

Participate in student recruiting activities.

Coordinate scheduling of classes with colleagues, including those in other disciplines.

Teach in a variety of instructional settings and times, including evening and weekend, online or off‑campus, and large‑group instruction classes as needed.

Other duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.

Minimum Qualifications All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom; AND

Master’s in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography, or paleontology; OR

A valid California Community College Credential; OR

The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications

Experience and skill incorporating diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility.

Recent experience working with African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom.

Willingness to examine and remediate one's instructional, relational, and classroom practices to better engage and support racially minoritized students.

Related work and professional experience.

Experience working with students of various cultural, gender, age, socioeconomic, and ethnic backgrounds, including disabled students.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff.

Potential for contribution to institutional vitality and growth.

Knowledge of the community college mission and goals.

Conditions of Employment 178 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits Annual salary ranges from $71,054 to $106,970 based on education and experience (duty days prorated). An annual doctoral stipend of $2,419 is available. Fringe benefits include medical, dental, vision coverage for employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are members of the California State Teacher’s Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure

Selection advisory committee reviews qualified candidates and determines interview invites.

Interviewees receive a teaching demonstration and writing prompt if applicable.

Selected candidates forwarded to the Vice President and College President for final interviews.

Hiring recommendation made by College President to the Board of Trustees for final approval.
