Location: Newport News, VA • Contract • Pay: $44.66 – $56.65/hr
Job Description
The Structural Engineer position requires a subject matter expert (SME) providing technical oversight for various structural and mechanical systems on the floating dry dock. The engineer will be required to develop a cohesive working relationship with utility system operators, maintenance personnel, and dock masters. The candidate must have knowledge of structural design, mechanical design, or naval architecture.
Analyzes, researches & develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical & electronics, power plant, armament, heating & ventilating, equipment & maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables & structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics & loads, stability & stress fatigue & thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.
Basic Qualifications 5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD. Requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Day‑to‑Day Responsibilities
Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues within assigned system(s)
Provide engineering resolutions for system problems & configuration changes
Produce &/or oversee the development of technical documentation that govern the system design, configuration, & operation
Provide in‑field technical support of maintenance & project teams
Develop a long‑range strategic plan for improvements to assigned dock system(s)
Participate in the development of planned maintenance requirements
Support resolution of unplanned events
Develop & maintain critical system metrics
Participate in project design & implementation process for system related projects
Oversee project/system testing to ensure system meets technical requirements & operates at peak performance
Support internal & external audits of the floating dry dock
