Qualifications Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in architecture; fire protection; or architectural, civil, electrical, fire protection, mechanical, systems or industrial engineering or related engineering degree dealing with building construction and experience equivalent to four years in one or a combination of the following areas:

Any engineering or architectural work

Experience in construction design using structural components, or the management of commercial or governmental construction projects

Any skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, inspection or other related building maintenance or construction trades work under the supervision of a licensed contractor

Any licensed building maintenance or construction trades work

The supervision of staff involved with building or transportation maintenance

Substitution of Education for Experience:

Graduate course work received from an accredited college or university in architecture, fire protection and/or a related engineering degree dealing with building construction may substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis to a maximum of one year (e.g., 36 graduate hours in architecture and/or a pertinent engineering science may substitute for the one year of required experience).

Substitution of Experience for Education:

Qualifying experience in one or a combination of the following areas may substitute for the required education on a year basis to a maximum of four years

Engineering or architectural work

Experience in construction design using structural components, or the management of commercial or governmental construction projects

Any skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, inspection of other related building maintenance or construction trades work under the supervision of a licensed contractor

Any licensed building maintenance or construction trades work

The supervision of staff involved with building or transportation maintenance

Overview Under minimal supervision, the incumbent performs professional facility construction engineering work of considerable difficulty and related work as required. This is the advanced working level and/or lead class in the Facilities Construction sub-series. The employee provides technical engineering advice of considerable complexity to top management and/or functions as a lead worker over a group of subordinate Facilities Construction Specialists.

Responsibilities

Interprets building, accessibility, safety codes, and state and federal laws for customers, acting as an expert when needed.

Troubleshoots project issues to expedite corrections and reviews change order documents for validity and compliance.

Reviews project engineering and architectural plans for accuracy and compliance, monitoring project documents throughout various phases.

Observes on-site construction progress to ensure compliance with contractual plans, obtaining necessary completion and approval documents.

Prepares for inspections in the event of terrorism or disasters, interacting with Emergency Management agencies and performing damage assessments.

Assists with site inspections on architectural, engineering, or construction projects, and performs project completion inspections.

Confers with architects and engineers to resolve project-related concerns, providing technical engineering advice for building repairs and improvements.

Responds to questions and coordinates information exchange about facilities construction and maintenance issues with the general public and relevant professionals.
