GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs routine public safety duties as needed to assure safe crossing of school children and the general public at intersections and other road crossings.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Lieutenant/Asst. Chief, Chief or an assigned employee.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Observes road traffic to determine best timing for road crossings; admits children and pedestrians into designated crossing locations; escorts children and pedestrians as needed to assure safe crossings.
Monitors behavior of children and explains rules of traffic safety to children as appropriate; instructs kindergarten children regarding safety education at the beginning of the year.
Observes general activity while on duty to detect suspicious behaviors; reports such observations.
Attends annual training and safety courses.
May prepare various reports related to work time and work activities.
Performs related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
A. Sufficient education to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above and related duties (graduation from high school desired);
B. Sufficient experience to demonstrate a working knowledge of practices and procedures associated with above duties;
C. An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Some knowledge of local traffic laws; some knowledge of basic traffic safety; some knowledge of basic first aid; some knowledge of basic interpersonal communication skills; some knowledge of the operation of traffic signal equipment and semaphores; ability to establish a working relationship with school children and parents.
Special Qualifications: Must be willing to tolerate working in all weather extremes.
