Wasatch County Building Department seeks full-time Building Inspector IV positions (Grade R $48.17-61.66 DOE). Positions may be underfilled based on recruitment for the position and inspectors with all levels of certification are encouraged to apply. Responsible to perform building inspections on residential and commercial buildings to determine compliance with adopted State and County construction codes.
STEP AND GRADE CHARACTERISTICS Building Inspector I: (Grade M - $36.00-$46.08). This is the entry inspector classification level and requires the equivalent to a high school diploma and two (2) years’ work experience in the construction industry and/or performing building inspections and plan checking activities. Incumbents holding this classification are in training and working toward ICC/State certification.
Building Inspector II: (Grade N - $38.15-$48.83). This classification level is held by fully certified ICC/State Inspectors. Requires the equivalent to a high school diploma and four (4) years’ work experience in the construction industry and/or performing building inspections and plan checking activities.
Building Inspector III: (Grade P $42.88-$54.88). This classification level is responsible for performing highly advanced technical duties and providing training and leadership to other inspectors. Requires the equivalent to a high school diploma and six (6) years’ work experience in the construction industry and/or performing building inspections and plan checking activities.
Building Inspector IV: (Grade R $48.17-$61.66). This is the lead classification level responsible for performing all above duties listed in Inspector III and advanced training and leadership to other inspectors.
In addition, Inspector III qualifications must have a total of ten (10) years’ work experience all as a fully residential and commercial building inspector and plan checking experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES Under general direction, performs building inspections and checks plans to determine compliance with adopted State and County construction codes.
QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
ICC commercial and residential 4-way certification or the ability to obtain it within six months
6+ years general construction or building inspection experience or combination of post high school education and related experience
Utah State Driver’s License
Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Software
In the event of a declared emergency and as directed by the Chief Building Official or authorized Emergency command personnel, inspection services or other work as assigned
PREFERRED
Strong communication skills
Experience in custom software applications, ability to use the computer and type into a system
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Schedules and performs code-required building inspections and writes findings in reports.
Reviews plans and permit files before performing inspections.
Reviews plans, determines permit fees, checks for code compliance, and resolves deficiencies with the builder.
Approves plans, issues permits and maintains files for permits and plans.
Checks for expiration of plans, permits, and bonds and makes cancellations when required.
Issues building clearance for certificates of occupancy.
Research pertinent code provisions, ownership records, assessment data, and building permit files.
Identifies and documents building violations and issues notices to comply.
Refers zoning, fire code, and other violations to appropriate offices and clears record or refers case for legal action as appropriate.
Answers technical questions on code and accepted construction practices and responds verbally or in a written response when required.
Arranges to meet builders on job sites.
Maintains daily log of activities.
Reviews permits for lapse of inspection or expiration and notifies permit holders.
Forwards complete and closed out permit files for storage.
Updates library with current code books, research reports, and training materials and reviews publications for new products, recommendations, and other information.
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INSPECTOR IV
Provides advanced leadership and coordination inspection activities for large projects.
Trains other inspectors in work process and recent changes in field applications.
