Summary The purpose of the position is to perform a wide variety of emergency repairs throughout the medical center. This position is in the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System - Engineering Service - West Los Angeles Section - Pipefitting and Emergency Mechanics Unit - Los Angeles - CA.

Experience: A specific length of training and experience is not required - but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge – skills – and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Duties

Perform frequent and periodic inspections of all equipment.

Inventory and secure all equipment and supplies.

Carry out special assignments as delegated.

Perform any other related duties that may be assigned.

Understand mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic systems and principles of operation and fix mobile equipment, machines, and machinery.

Initiate electronic work orders, document man-hours, findings, repairs and materials.

Perform work at the journeymen level on a variety of equipment and systems.

Conduct initial inspections, testing, operations of newly acquired equipment and machinery, document and retain records.

Perform electrical work: repairs, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, insulating defective wiring and controls.

Troubleshoot and diagnose faulty equipment and machinery or power and control issues using electrical and electronic testing equipment.

Responsible for installing, repairing, and adjusting air conditioning and refrigeration equipment throughout the medical center.

Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on a variety of critical hospital equipment and systems.

Work schedule: rotating shift to include 6AM-4PM / 2PM-MID / 10PM-8AM / MID-10AM / shift schedule rotating and holiday coverage required.

Rotations are every 8 weeks.

Physical Requirements The incumbent must exert moderate to arduous physical effort involving working – standing – bending – stooping – lifting and crawling while performing his/her duties at the Medical Center. He/she must be able to lift loads of up to 25 pounds unassisted and climb ladders and scaffolding and work in confined spaces.

Preferred Experience Must have journeyman experience in two of the five following fields: mechanical repair – electrical repair – plumbing repair – carpentry repair – low voltage electrical systems (such as fire alarm monitoring systems).
