Plumber – Hospital Maintenance

As a Hospital Maintenance Plumber in UAB Facilities, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the proper functioning of plumbing systems throughout our healthcare facility. Your responsibilities will include installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing systems within the hospital to align with the distinct requirements and standards of a healthcare setting, all while demonstrating a dedication to providing excellent customer service.
Essential Job Functions
Water Systems:
Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements, and installations of domestic hot and cold water systems, including pumps, piping, valves, dietary equipment, restroom fixtures, filters, and water treatment equipment.
HVAC Systems:
Serves HVAC hot and chilled water components, including coils, boilers, hot and chilled water piping, and valves.
Waste Removal Systems:
Manages waste removal systems, including grease traps, piping, sewage processing equipment, sanitary drain lines, traps, sewage ejectors, and bedpan washers.
Steam Systems:
Maintains and performs repairs, modifications, replacements, and installations of steam systems, including traps, piping, valves, heat exchangers, condensate return systems, flash tanks, boilers, and laundry equipment.
Life Safety Systems:
Serves life safety systems and specialized medical and research equipment, including fire protection systems, medical gas lines, autoclaves, sterilizers, and vacuum systems.
Maintenance Requests:
Responds to maintenance and services requests from building occupants, including emergencies, maintenance problems, installations, modifications, repairs, and adjustments.
Compliance:
Ensures all work complies with plumbing codes and regulations.
Record Keeping:
Utilizes an iPad to maintain accurate records of plumbing activities, including repairs, installations, and inspections in the maintenance software system.
Collaboration:
Collaborates with customers to understand specific plumbing needs and provides appropriate solutions.
Teamwork:
Works closely with other maintenance and management staff to address cross‑functional issues.
Emergency Response:
Responds promptly to plumbing emergencies and provides effective solutions to minimize downtime and ensure patient and staff safety.
Health and Safety:
Ensures compliance with health and safety standards during all plumbing activities.
Meetings and Training:
Attends safety meetings and other required meetings and training.
Customer Service:
Provides exceptional customer service.
Compensation Hourly pay range for this classification: $19.80 – $25.75 – $32.15. Starting offers will not necessarily begin at the midpoint or maximum of the range. Offers are determined by relevant experience (including UAB/UAB Medicine and external), pay grade minimums, internal equity, departmental budget, UAB salary guidelines, and the salaries of incumbents in the classification.
Qualifications Associate’s degree or Technical Diploma in a related field, or successful completion of a plumbing apprenticeship training program as defined by the State of Alabama Plumbers & Gasfitters Examining Board, AND three (3) years of related experience to include plumbing maintenance with similar facilities. Work experience may substitute for education requirement.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Basic mechanical aptitude
Using a handheld device, ability to enter data and manage work orders in work order management software
Knowledge of trades mathematics and communications
Plumbing skills
Ability to work in a hospital environment
Steam fitting/pipe-fitting skills
Strong knowledge of plumbing codes and regulations
Proficiency in using plumbing tools and equipment
Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical diagrams
Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong communication and customer service skills
Ability to use an iPad and maintenance software for record-keeping
Physical requirements: lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs, climb stairs, ladders, and scaffolding up to 30 feet, work in confined spaces, work within extreme temperature ranges, use SCBA as required.
Licenses, Certifications & Registrations
Currently licensed with a Journeyman Plumber or Master Plumber license issued by the State of Alabama Plumbers and Gas Fitters Examining Board. Fire pump and Backflow certification preferred. Minimum of 6,000 hours of verifiable on-the-job training for the Plumber certification, or equivalent verifiable experience.
Driving record meets University underwriting guidelines: valid U.S. driver’s license, at least 21 years of age, at least three years of driving experience, acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
