Job Description Summary The Sr. Software Manager is a critical leadership role in BD's Urological and Critical Care (UCC) division, accountable for guiding the development of embedded and application-level software for innovative medical devices from early concept through design freeze and transfer into formal verification and validation (V&V). The role spans BD's diverse UCC portfolio, including Endourology, Targeted Temperature Management, Acute Care, and Homecare solutions.

This position leads a team of software engineers focused on translating clinical needs into robust, scalable software architectures that integrate seamlessly with electromechanical systems. The Senior Software Manager will work closely with Systems Engineering, Electrical and Mechanical R&D, Human Factors, and Quality to ensure solutions meet safety, usability, and performance standards in the medical device regulatory environment.

Key Responsibilities

Lead and develop a high-performance team of software engineers across multiple product platforms.

Oversee software development from concept through design freeze, including architecture, requirements definition, prototyping, and design implementation.

Ensure software design aligns with system-level architecture and complies with IEC 62304 and other applicable medical device standards.

Collaborate cross-functionally to define software specifications from clinical and user needs.

Manage project resourcing, priorities, and risk mitigation for pre-V&V software efforts.

Oversee software design documentation and traceability in accordance with BD's design control procedures.

Establish software best practices including code reviews, unit testing, configuration management, and cybersecurity readiness.

Work with external software vendors, design partners, and contract developers as needed.

Support design transfer to the formal V&V team and sustain cross-functional continuity through the development lifecycle.

Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and compliance within the software engineering function.

Required Skills / Experience

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or related discipline.

Minimum 8–10 years of experience in software development for medical devices or other safety‑critical systems, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.

Demonstrated experience in embedded software, real‑time systems, and/or application‑layer integration for electromechanical products.

Deep understanding of IEC 62304, risk management (ISO 14971), and software lifecycle requirements in a regulated environment.

Proven ability to lead projects from concept through architecture and design freeze.

Experience with Agile and hybrid development methodologies.

Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.

Comfortable managing both in‑house teams and external partners.

Preferred Skills / Experience

Master's degree preferred.

Work Shift For most roles, a minimum of 4 days of in‑office presence per week is required to maintain culture of excellence and ensure smooth operations. Remote or field‑based positions have different workplace arrangements indicated in the job posting.

Salary Range $143,900.00 - $237,600.00 USD Annual
