Overview The GEAR UP RISE UP program presents a grant‑funded opportunity for a Counseling Services Coordinator (CSC). The CSC works under the direction of the GEAR UP Director and Associate Director to develop, plan, and deliver services to low‑income and first‑generation students and their families in the Yakima School District. This role involves advising students, monitoring academic progress, coordinating college preparation, delivering family outreach, and ensuring compliance with grant requirements.

Responsibilities

Conduct advising sessions at target schools and monitor student progress.

Advise students on course selection, placement in advanced coursework, and arrange for tutorial support, behavioral interventions, or referrals when needed.

Provide individualized college planning sessions for seniors and families, covering research, selection, scholarships, financial aid, enrollment, and financial literacy.

Track completion of college, financial aid, and scholarship applications, including FAFSA, to support annual performance reporting.

Organize and deliver programming for participants and parents, such as family financial literacy nights, field trips, and cultural events.

Collaborate with teachers to identify at‑risk students and supervise student tutoring services.

Coordinate with agencies offering mentoring and other support services.

Document activities for reporting requirements and external evaluation.

Encourage engagement through communication with students, families, teachers, guidance counselors, and community partners.

Perform other duties as assigned by the GEAR UP Director or Associate Director.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, or a related field.

At least 2 years of experience in an educational setting (K‑12 or post‑secondary), delivering college access services or managing large federal/state grants such as GEAR UP, TRIO, or similar initiatives.

Equivalence in education or experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications, except where legal requirements (e.g., license, certification) apply.

Additional Requirements

Program Management Skills – ability to set goals, maintain stakeholder engagement, meet reporting deadlines, and prioritize tasks.

Communication Skills – excellent interpersonal, written, and public‑speaking abilities.

Student Engagement – proven ability to serve and connect with middle‑school, high‑school, and college students from historically excluded, low‑income, or first‑generation backgrounds.

Teamwork and Independence – capable of working independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Language Skills – bilingual proficiency in Spanish (written and oral).

Desired Requirements

Experience in bilingual and/or bicultural environments and engaging students and families.

Knowledge of GEAR UP RISE UP partner schools, regional initiatives, and local communities.

Postsecondary Expertise – familiarity with Washington State colleges and pathways, admissions, and financial aid processes.

Technical Proficiency – skilled in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams) and familiar with university/district systems.

Compensation and Benefits Pay Range:

$62,520.00 annually (minimum and maximum).
