The Manager Structural Design leads the group and participates in the research, plan, and design of structural products and systems, and directs and coordinates activities involved in fabrication, application, installation, and repair of structural products and systems. The Manager Structural Design is responsible to ensure that products developed meet the required cost targets, technical specifications, and, that projects are completed within the projected timelines. The Manager Structural Design must work with cross‑functional teams and departments involving core team members for important project decisions and actions. The company policies and procedures must be rigorously applied.
Responsibilities
Designs products and systems, including welded fabrications, castings and machined parts.
Develops and coordinates project plans, communicates changes and progress, and completes projects on time and within budget.
Researches and analyzes customer design proposals, specifications and manuals to determine design or application feasibility.
Supports fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
Supports operation, maintenance and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment.
Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
Works independently and as a team member with other Group Managers, Engineers, Designers and production personnel or on ad‑hoc projects.
Forecasts department operating costs and contributes to the preparation of the budget.
Supervisory Duties
Directly supervises 4‑6 employees.
Responsible for overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the Structural Design team.
Performs supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
Interview, hire, train, plan, assign and direct work; appraise performance; reward and discipline employees; address complaints and resolve problems.
Education and Experience
Master of Science or Master of Engineering (M.S./M.E.) with 4 years of engineering experience *or* Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical or Structural Engineering with at least 10 years of experience in heavy‑industrial equipment design and development. Candidate should have 2 years of experience directly managing technical staff.
Knowledge of structural design engineering, finite element analysis, material properties and database/software tools (AutoCAD, Pro‑engineer Design, Microsoft Project, MS Office).
Knowledge of the BaaN system relating to truck Bill of Material (BOM) structure and inventory control.
Advanced mathematical ability (exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, permutations, frequency distribution, test reliability, analysis of variance, correlation, sampling theory, factor analysis).
Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical documentation, drawings, schematics, specifications, regulations.
Ability to interpret instructions in written, oral or schematic form and maintain discretion.
Travel domestically and internationally up to 20% of the time; valid driver’s license, passport and MSHA certification.
