Job Summary This position requires an engineer with significant experience in the environmental and solid waste industry. The ideal candidate will possess superior problem‑solving and management skills to oversee a diverse portfolio of technical projects. The candidate will be directly responsible for engineering and construction at solid waste disposal facilities, communicate with senior management, and mentor junior staff. The role will continually challenge you to use your knowledge and skills to advance WM’s status as the leader and innovator in providing comprehensive waste management services to a variety of clients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Engage, direct, and manage professional consulting firms at solid waste facilities, preparing permit applications and construction plans, conducting site monitoring, and preparing regulatory submittals. Ensure final work product meets standards.

Maintain a strong working relationship with regulators and serve as direct line of communication on technical and permitting matters between regulatory agencies and operating sites. Represent WM in permit meetings, hearings, site inspections, and as a community liaison at technical conferences and forums.

Manage landfill construction projects from planning through final approval, including preparation of construction plans, consultant and contractor management, budgeting, bid documents, contract administration, and coordination of construction quality assurance and material delivery.

Actively manage and track capital budgets for engineering and construction projects and report to local management and corporate using company procedures.

Coordinate landfill capacity tracking to manage this key asset, including developing airspace calculations, completing capacity projections, and working with landfill managers to develop efficient fill sequencing plans and schedules for cell construction and closure timing.

Provide continuous evaluation of sites for adherence to construction and permit documents and for site expansion potential through regular site visits. Proactively pursue and obtain required or beneficial permits and/or permit modifications.

Collaborate with other professionals and subject‑matter experts within WM to provide innovative, cost‑effective engineering solutions to identified or potential operational, environmental, and compliance issues at landfills, transfer stations, hauling operations, and other businesses in your area and potentially across the company. Provide technical expertise and direction to management and functional areas such as finance, legal, and safety to present a clear path to resolution.

Participate in review of acquisitions and coordination and evaluation of divestitures, including pro‑forma modeling assistance and interaction with corporate and executive management during due diligence.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or a similar area of study; 5 years of related experience.

Physical Requirements

Require use of motor coordination with finger dexterity (e.g., keyboard, tablet data entry).

Ability to exert physical effort in handling objects less than 30 pounds.

Site work may involve exposure to physical occupational risks associated with chemicals, fuels, wastewater, and construction operations such as dirt, odors, noise, weather extremes, or similar.

Regional travel up to 20% of time within the market area.

The specific salary offered may be influenced by experience, education, certifications, qualifications, and work location. This position is eligible for incentive pay.

The expected salary range for this position is $103,070–$120,000 per year.
