To perform routine technical and paraprofessional land surveying support work in the field or office; and perform related duties as assigned. This is the full journey level class in the Survey Technician series and is distinguished from the Survey Technician I level by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise. Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the level I, or by outside candidates having prior experience.

Essential Functions Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: assist higher level Land Surveyors in completing a full range of field and office tasks, including conducting various types of land surveys such as boundary, utility, as-built, and topographic surveys; monument preservation tie-outs and resets, horizontal and vertical control surveys, photogrammetric surveys, and construction staking; draft and/or map various land surveying related documents and/or exhibits using Autodesk Civil 3D software as directed; solve routine surveying problems using COGO Applications, Civil 3D and/or handheld software; operate a variety of surveying equipment and instruments, including robotic total stations, scanners, global positioning systems (GPS), unmanned serial systems (UAS) or drones and other data collection devices; under direct supervision, interpret and write less complex legal descriptions and deeds; identify complex surveying problems encountered in the field, with particular emphasis on construction staking; utilizes office and field computers and data collectors; assist in researching and compiling information necessary to conduct surveys from notes, maps, legal descriptions, deeds and other surveying documents; assist in reviewing deeds and easements, traverse closures, adjustment of traverses; assist in maintaining City land survey records including intersection tie sheets, corner records, records of survey, final and parcel maps, lot line adjustments and certificates of compliance; assist in the review of Final Maps, Parcel Maps, Lot Line Adjustment Plats, Corner Records, Records of Survey, Grading and Improvement Plans, and other various land development plans; maintain records, sketches, and maps of work and data collected in the field; verify the accuracy of data by calculations and field computations; use and maintain all survey equipment; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service; and perform related duties as assigned.

Any combination of education and/or experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: two years of responsible experience in field survey, drafting, or related civil engineering work and training equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college coursework in engineering, mathematics, drafting, surveying, computer science/CADD, or related field. An Associate's Degree is desirable. License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California driver's license. Possession of the LSIT (Land Surveyor-in-Training) Certificate is highly desirable. Possession of Federal Aviation Administration Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate is highly desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of: basic mathematics covering geometry, trigonometry, and algebra; fundamentals and laws governing land surveying theory and practice; California Coordinate System “NAD83” and 'NAVD88', the Land Surveyor’s Act, the Subdivision Map Act, and Professional Board Rules; preliminary designs, construction, location of property and right-of-way boundaries, land divisions, control and geodetic surveying; computer aided drafting and design systems (Trimble Business Center and AutoCAD Civil 3D), databases, GIS systems and other programs related to land survey; computer data plotting and Data Terrain Model (DTM) compilation; Subdivision, Parcel and Record of Survey maps; English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation; computer equipment and software applications related to assignment. Ability to: operate land surveying instruments and equipment; read and follow instructions; perform simple surveying calculations; make simple drawings, sketches, and notes; perform minor field calculations and make routine surveying decisions; review and interpret surveyor’s maps; operate computer equipment and software applications related to assignment; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and work with various cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions On a continuous basis walk, stand, bend, crouch, or stoop, sit for varying periods of time; must possess sufficient strength, stamina, agility, and dexterity to manipulate, operate, lift and carry objects, tools, and materials or equipment for field inspections, materials testing, surveying, and office work. Must possess ability to: read and write reports, correspondence, and instructions; verbally communicate in person, over a radio or telephone; see in the normal vision range with or without correction; hear in the normal range with or without correction. Work is performed both outdoors and indoors; the performance of fieldwork tasks requires exposure to a variety of traffic and weather conditions with possible exposure to hazardous materials; indoor work is performed in a carpeted and air-conditioned office environment with fluorescent lighting and moderate noise level. May operate equipment, tools, vehicles under daylight and evening conditions. Work is frequently disrupted by the need to respond to in-person and telephone inquiries.
