Overview Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO), GS‑9, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The CBPO protects the United States by enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws, facilitating trade, and preventing the illegal entry of persons and contraband.

Typical Responsibilities

Enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations

Facilitate the flow of legitimate trade and travel

Conduct inspections of individuals and conveyances

Determine the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States

Prevent illegal entry and smuggling of prohibited goods and drugs

Salary & Incentives

GS‑9 base salary: $61,111 – $124,443 per year (varies with locality)

Locality pay varies by duty location

Newly appointed CBPOs may receive up to $15,000 incentive per year (three to four year service contract)

Full‑trained CBPOs eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay

Qualifications

Experience : Minimum 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, including law‑enforcement related duties such as arresting violators, enforcing import/export laws, and conducting law‑enforcement interviews.

Education : A master’s degree (or higher) OR a JD/LLB from an accredited institution. Alternatively, a combination of specialized experience AND graduate‑level education.

Citizenship : U.S. citizen.

Residency : Primary U.S. residency for at least 3 of the last 5 years.

Age : Referrals must be made before the 40th birthday unless exempted by veteran or previous civil‑law‑enforcement service.

Veterans’ Preference : Eligible candidates may receive a Veterans Recruitment Appointment.

Training : 2‑week pre‑academy orientation and 101‑day CBP Field Operations Academy; Spanish training required for certain locations.
