Responsibilities

Answers to the Director, Division Chief or any Senior Attorney, depending on assignment, and provides a variety of legal services (civil, traffic, administrative, criminal law related).

Assists the Director of Law in providing legal counsel and representation to the City and its various departments, agencies, boards, officials and employees.

Performs legal research and renders both oral and written legal opinions.

Provides representation at administrative tribunals, municipal and state common pleas and appellate courts, including jury and non‑jury matters.

Handles plea negotiations and settlements of civil cases, controversies and claims.

Drafts memorandum, pleadings, briefs, contracts, ordinances, resolutions, legislation proposals, leases, deeds, purchase agreements and administrative regulations and policies on behalf of the City.

Stays informed of municipal, criminal, and related fields of law and fulfills all Continuing Legal Education (CLE) requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

L.L.B. or J.D. from an accredited law school in good standing with the Ohio Bar Association and 3 years of experience as a practicing attorney.

Master’s degree in Business Administration or Public Administration may be substituted for one year of the above required experience.

Degree must be from a college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.

License Requirements Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Special Requirements Must be licensed to practice law in the State of Ohio and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check: A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to employment. All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position.
