Director of Nursing SUMMARY The primary purpose of the Director of Nursing position is to plan, organize, develop and direct the overall operation of our Nursing Department in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator and the Medical Director, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan, develop, organize, implement, evaluate, and direct the nursing service department according to current rules, regulations and guidelines.

Develop, maintain, and update written policies and procedures that govern the day‑to‑day functions of the nursing service department.

Make written and oral reports to the Administrator concerning the operation of the nursing service department.

Coordinate nursing services with other resident services to ensure continuity of the residents’ total regimen of care.

Maintain a quality assurance program for the nursing department and participate in facility surveys as directed.

Assist the Quality Assessment & Assurance Committee in developing and implementing action plans to correct identified deficiencies.

Assist with discharge planning and complete administrative duties such as medical forms, reports, evaluations, and charting.

Monitor the facility’s QI, QM, and survey reports and assist in developing plans to correct deficiencies.

Calculate direct nursing care personnel on duty each shift and assign adequate licensed RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.

Develop work assignments, schedule duty hours, and delegate administrative authority to nursing personnel.

Make daily rounds to ensure all nursing personnel perform their assignments.

Assist the HR Director in developing annual performance evaluations for the nursing department and ensure fair disciplinary action with proper documentation.

Assist with infection control monitoring and the TB management program for employees.

Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals, and ensure safety precautions are documented.

Ensure personnel performing exposure‑risk tasks receive proper training.

Review nurses’ notes to ensure they are informative, descriptive, and reflect residents’ responses.

Monitor medication passes and treatment schedules to ensure correct administration.

Provide direct nursing care as necessary.

Coordinate continuing education and in‑service training for the nursing department.

Report suspected or known incidence of fraud to the Administrator.

Assist the MDS/Care Plan Coordinator in planning, scheduling, revising the MDS, implementing RAPs and triggers, and encourage resident and family participation.

Maintain confidentiality of all resident care information, including protected health information, and report incidents of unauthorized disclosure.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience in a hospital, nursing care facility, or other related health care facility.

Registered Nurse with current unencumbered state licensure.

Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Demonstrates teamwork, supports team concepts, and contributes as a team member.

Ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies, and the general public.

Knowledge of nursing and medical practices, laws, regulations, and guidelines relevant to nursing care facilities.

Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies, and procedures necessary for quality care.

Ability to communicate information concerning a resident’s condition.

Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Move intermittently throughout the workday.

Cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.

Meet the general health requirements set by facility policies, including medical and physical examinations.

Push, pull, move, and lift a minimum of 25 lbs. to a height of 5 feet and carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.

Assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations as needed.
