Overview
The Eugene Police Department (EPD) invites current college students or recent college graduates from the Southern Oregon area to join our progressive, professional law‑enforcement team.
The unique hiring process begins January 1, 2026 with testing scheduled in Ashland, OR on February 21‑22, 2026.
Applications are accepted online only.
The application deadline is Monday, February 16, 2026 at 5 p.m. P.T.
Successful applicants will be hired on June 29, 2026.
Responsibilities Police Officers perform a variety of law‑enforcement duties: first responder to incidents; direct link between the department and the public; respond to and investigate incident scenes; patrol assigned areas; enforce laws and ordinances; make arrests; preserve crime‑scene evidence; summarize events in report format; and engage in preventative community policing for diverse neighborhoods.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
– At least 21 years of age by July 15, 2026; no felony convictions; no Class A misdemeanor within 24 months of application; must work various shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays; meet Oregon state certification standards set by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
Education
– High school diploma or GED.
Experience
– Two years of work experience, college coursework, or military experience.
License and Certificate
– Valid Oregon driver’s license (or ability to obtain by hire); must pass a driving records check and maintain a record that meets the city’s standard.
CPR certification within twelve months of appointment.
Background Investigation
– Must pass a police background investigation.
A list of required documents is available on the city website.
Physical and Drug Test
– Must pass a physical assessment and drug test.
Additional hearing and visual acuity tests are required by the DPSST.
Language Fluency
– Fluency in a language in addition to English is desirable.
Preference for Spanish or sign‑language ability may be given.
Selection Process
ORPAT practice session – Saturday, February 7, 2026, 9‑11 a.m. (optional).
Apply by February 1, 2026 for more information.
Written test & ORPAT – Saturday, February 21, 2026.
Weapons and backpacks are not allowed.
Candidates may be searched upon entry.
Interviews – February 21‑22, 2026 (Saturday and Sunday).
Full background completed by April 27, 2026.
Chief interview – May 14, 2026.
Psychological evaluation and medical exam – May 18‑29, 2026.
Projected date of hire – June 29, 2026.
Salary & Benefits All Entry‑Police Officers begin at Step 1 ($37.59 hourly) and may advance to Step 6 ($47.92 hourly).
The annual salary for newly hired officers is $78,187.20, with potential to rise to $99,673.60 with experience, education, and training.
Officers are eligible for premium pay (up to 15% of base salary) after three years of employment and for a 5% increase for successful fluency in an eligible language (e.g., Spanish or American Sign Language).
Bilingual pay is available for employees who demonstrate required language competency and pass a fluency examination.
