Demurrage Specialist

The Demurrage Specialist plays a critical role in managing and resolving demurrage claims across marine operations. This position ensures timely settlement of receivable and payable claims, mitigates financial exposure through proactive contract review, and collaborates with internal stakeholders to optimize commercial outcomes. The role requires strong analytical, negotiation, and contractual skills, combined with the ability to influence and partner across Trading, Shipping, Legal, and Finance teams.
Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to: Demurrage Claims Management
Track potential claims, gather documentation, and maintain accurate records of claim amounts and counterparties.
Calculate or validate laytime basis contractual agreements.
Issue, analyze, negotiate, and settle terminal, charter party, and barge demurrage claims within contractual time-bar deadlines.
Commercial Analysis
Grasp the commercial aspects and implications of demurrage claims handling.
Identify trends and provide feedback to reduce overall demurrage exposure.
Deliver analytical reviews of commercial performance and exposure to refineries, terminals, chartering, operations and trading teams.
Review and provide guidance on Laytime & Demurrage clauses for contracts, tenders, and general terms to minimize exposure at source.
Stakeholder Collaboration
Work closely with Trading, Shipping, Legal, and Finance teams to ensure alignment and timely resolution of claims.
Support cross-functional initiatives to improve efficiency and compliance with global processes.
Required qualifications
Bachelor’s degree (Business, Finance, Maritime Studies, or related field).
Strong commercial acumen and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in
Excel
and ability to analyze complex data sets.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Ability to foster collaboration and build positive relationships internally and externally.
Preferred Experience
Knowledge of marine transportation in energy industry, including key drivers and payers as they relate to demurrage.
Familiarity with demurrage systems (e.g., Veson VIP, Sedna, Voyager Portal).
Prior experience in shipping or trading operations.
