Project Manager – EMPI & Epic Interface Implementation
Location:
New York, NY Note:
Hybrid role
Role Overview We are seeking a senior, hands‑on Project Manager to support a multi‑phase Enterprise Master Patient Index (EMPI) implementation and downstream data extraction and archive initiatives within a large healthcare system. This role sits at the intersection of Epic, EMPI, system interfaces, and legacy data archiving. The PM will act as the primary conduit between product, engineering, vendors, and client stakeholders, ensuring scope clarity, aggressive execution, and delivery across parallel workstreams. This is a technical PM role, not an administrative PM position.
Key Focus Areas (Non‑Negotiable)
EMPI implementation and interface coordination
Epic data feeds and Epic‑integrated workflows
Legacy EMR / source system data extraction and archiving
Cross‑team coordination across product, engineering, and client IT
Driving execution in a loosely defined, discovery‑heavy environment
Primary Responsibilities Project & Delivery Management
Own day‑to‑day project execution for EMPI implementation and Epic interface workstreams
Drive parallel Phase 1 (EMPI + Epic feed) and Phase 2 (data usage, outbound interfaces, archive planning)
Establish and maintain detailed project plans, timelines, milestones, and dependency tracking
Act as a forcing function to move discovery, decisions, and delivery forward in ambiguous environments
Technical Coordination
Coordinate EMPI setup activities, including inbound and outbound data feeds
Manage Epic‑related interface discussions, dependencies, and sequencing
Partner closely with engineering teams responsible for EMPI configuration and integrations
Translate technical discussions into clear, actionable plans for business and clinical stakeholders
Data Extraction & Archive Oversight
Support archive planning for multiple legacy EMR and source systems (up to 12 systems anticipated)
Coordinate data extraction activities tied to decommissioning and archival workflows
Ensure EMPI is aligned to downstream archive usage (patient identity resolution across systems)
Track risks, dependencies, and sequencing related to extraction, validation, and decommissioning
Stakeholder & Vendor Management
Serve as the central communication bridge between product management, engineering teams, client IT and clinical stakeholders, external vendors and implementation partners
Run and facilitate working sessions, status meetings, and executive updates
Deliver concise, clear written and verbal communications to technical and non‑technical audiences
Governance & Reporting
Establish lightweight governance and reporting structures aligned to client expectations
Provide weekly status updates, risk logs, and issue tracking
Identify long poles, blockers, and risks early and drive mitigation plans
Support onboarding and ramp‑up of resources to avoid delivery delays
Required Qualifications
7+ years of Project Management experience in healthcare IT environments
Direct EMPI implementation experience (Enterprise Master Patient Index)
Epic certification (required)
Proven experience managing system interfaces (Epic to downstream platforms)
Strong understanding of healthcare data flows, patient identity, and interoperability
Experience supporting data extraction, migration, or archiving initiatives
Demonstrated ability to operate as a technical PM (comfortable in engineering conversations)
Excellent communication skills with the ability to “translate tech speak into plain English”
Strongly Preferred / Ideal Experience
Experience with legacy EMR systems and healthcare archives (e.g., Meditech, OnBase, similar)
Prior work in large public‑sector or hospital network environments
Experience managing projects with incomplete requirements and evolving scope
Familiarity with EMPI usage for downstream analytics, reporting, or archive retrieval
Background supporting system decommissioning initiatives
PMP or equivalent certification (preferred, not required)
Success Profile (What Will Make Someone Successful)
Aggressive, proactive, and comfortable pushing conversations forward
Highly organized with strong follow‑through
Comfortable operating with ambiguity during discovery phases
Trusted communicator who can work across technical and non‑technical teams
Able to “bulldog” complex initiatives without overstepping governance
If you are bright, motivated, skilled, a difference‑maker, able to get things done, work with minimum direction, enthusiastic, a thinker, able to juggle and multi‑task, communicate effectively, and lead, we would love to hear from you. Tell us why you think you are a fit.
