Position Summary We are currently recruiting a Student Support Specialist. The Drill Sergeant/Camp Counselor will provide direct supervision of teens aged 16‑18 in a quasi‑military structure, assist in developing and implementing crisis intervention, trauma‑informed care, student support and encouragement, provide referrals for interventions and counseling on problem solving, decision making and self‑management under the supervision of licensed personnel (teachers, counselors, administrators). This Full‑Time position starts at $20 per hour and is in Virginia Beach, VA.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Clock in and out.
Obtain blue access badge.
Complete barracks log and account for platoon handheld radios, chargers, stereo, refrigerator on a daily basis annotated in the barracks log platoon.
Serve as a role model/mentor for cadets in the ChalleNGe program. Abide by the hands‑off policy. Address cadets and ChalleNGe staff professionally at all times.
Use of personal cell phones is restricted to emergencies.
Attend mandatory in‑service training classes (Cadre Course, Confidentiality, Mandated Reporting, Gang Awareness, Sexual Harassment, Fraternization, Handle with Care, First Aid, Fire Drills) when directed by Deputy.
Provide first line supervision to ensure proper accountability, control and safety.
Ensure 100% accountability of barracks equipment (radio, charger and keys) and radio.
Conduct Drill & Ceremony with the cadets, practicing marching and facing movements and other specific military function.
Maintain a working knowledge of principles, practices, procedures and techniques of FM 22‑5 Drill and Ceremonies and FM 22‑100 Army Leadership.
March candidates/cadets to different locations as per the plan of the day and team leader. Basic cadence required to be called by all ATACs (left, right, etc.).
Maintain 100% accountability of cadets while on shift at all times.
Provide recommendations in writing to the training Warrant Officer Cadet behavior.
Complete required forms to include Incident Reports, Cadet ATAC Counseling forms to address behavior before departing shift. However, should complete as soon as possible while on shift.
Complete daily cadet assessment forms and turn them in every shift.
Ensure cadets do not use the gear locker, unattended nor as a hang out. Ensure cadets personal gear is secured and safe, gray sweats labeled and stored, all footlockers have locks and cadets lock their footlockers. Ensure cadets are wearing the uniform of the day properly and address deficiencies with cadet and Team Leader. Ensure cadets have shaved daily while on shift, notify Team Leader if any issues. Ensure cadets area and barracks are set up as required, everything where it belongs, no gear adrift. Follow Laundry Room procedures/protocol per Team Leader. May be asked to place cadet laundry in washer and dryer. Supervise cadets in the classroom, barracks and Dining Facility as well as on field trips. Ensure cadets following proper dining facility procedures when they enter, eat, depart that will be provided by Team Leader. Learn and enforce the standards from the Cadet Handbook. Prevent cadets from damaging ChalleNGe property at all times. De‑escalate situations with the cadets, not escalated using Conflict Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques as needed. Ensure cadets are conducting forced water hydration procedures. Ensure cadets are always safe; using sunscreen, wearing hat in the sun, gloves in the cold, vest as road guards. Ensure cadets understand proper procedures for laundry, showers, mail call, dining facility, PT, phone calls, classroom procedures, procedures for submitting request forms. Understand the 8 core component requirements that cadets must complete prior to graduation. Conduct weekly military science and other training with cadets. Report any self or observed violations of the Hands‑Off policy to the Commandant or Deputy Director immediately. Read the Plan of the Day and Shift Turnover logs and execute as per Team Leader. Complete any additional duties as directed by the Platoon Sergeant/Team Leader, Commandant, Program Coordinator, Deputy Director or the Director. Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems. Participate in staff meetings and attend other meetings and seminars as assigned. Recommend new approaches, policies, and procedures, to continually improve efficiency of the department and services performed. Efficiently perform duties as assigned and work as a team within division and company. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities
Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication skills within the English language.
Proven, high quality customer service (internal and external customers).
Ability to work collaboratively.
Solid ability to analyze situations carefully and adopt appropriate courses of action.
Ability to understand and adhere to the duties, methods, and procedures required by the position.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to prioritize tasks.
Ability to effectively communicate to large and small group audiences.
Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
Education And Experience
High school diploma or equivalent, preferred.
Drill Sergeant and Camp Counselor experience preferred.
Physical Requirements
Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to lift and move up to 25 pounds at times.
Standard hours of work Monday through Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.
Travel may be required up to 10% of the time.
