The Project Manager accepts profit and loss responsibility and accountability for the execution of all project contracts and customer accounts as assigned by Alterman management. The Project Manager carries out project tasks safely, at the highest quality and lowest cost.

Essential Functions

Account Management: 10% – Takes ownership and ensures long‑term customer satisfaction, revenue growth, and cross‑selling opportunities.

Evaluates bidding, material buy‑outs, and negotiating opportunities for assigned accounts.

Maintains effective communications with Alterman personnel and relevant departments.

Timely informs Senior Project Manager or Director of significant issues and provides recommended solutions.

Project Planning: 10% – Works with Preconstruction and Project Support to maximize profit opportunities.

Leads project kick‑off meetings and work sessions with estimating and support groups.

Prepares estimate breakdowns using the Labor Analysis Workflow (LAW) SOP.

Reviews plans and specifications; ensures appropriate safety programs are initiated.

Project Management (Office): 30% – Manages assigned projects per Alterman policies; completes startup procedures; projects budgets; schedules construction, materials, labor, and cash flow.

Interprets contracts and provides input to the project team.

Project Development – Leads 25‑90‑100% review meetings; prepares documentation; establishes schedule of values; assists in billing preparation and projections for fee‑based projects.

Prepares accurate job‑cost projections; change‑order proposals; quotations; bills of materials; shop drawings; major purchase orders; maintains material files.

Coordinates with Purchasing for material procurement and budget adherence.

Manages selection and evaluation of supervisory personnel; coordinates labor budget.

Completes project close‑out procedures – punch list, final billing, retainage, warranty, returns, closing purchase orders, final AHJ inspections, and updates to O&M manuals.

Project Management (Field): 15% – Completes startup and development duties on site; attends meetings; maintains accurate cost projections; processes shop drawings; oversees supervisory personnel; manages labor budget; handles close‑out procedures.

Works with the department director or Senior Project Manager on critical path activities; documents processes and updates annually.

Performs other duties as assigned – 10%.

Education And Experience

Must meet at least one of the following pathways:

Outside Lineman Apprenticeship Completion (or equivalent), 2 years’ experience as a field supervisor, and successful completion of the 2‑year Assistant Project Manager program.

Associate degree in Business Management, Construction Management, or Construction Engineering plus successful completion of the 2‑year Assistant Project Manager program.

2 years’ experience as a Project Manager in the electrical substation, transmission, or distribution construction industry.

Must possess knowledge of high‑voltage substations, MV underground, switchgear, transformers, and the relationship of transmission and distribution systems to a substation.

Skills/Abilities

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Effective reasoning and judgement.

Proficient with Primavera, Microsoft Project, Microsoft Suite, accounting and estimating software; able to learn new systems quickly.

Ability to read and interpret all contract documents, plans, specifications, and requirements.

Adaptability to fast‑paced environments and ability to capitalize on project opportunities.

In-depth knowledge of trade terms, materials, methods, codes, contract language, and bidding methods.

Knowledge of the National Electric Code and electrical engineering fundamentals.

Commitment to continuous education and training requirements.

Work Environment Office environment with some travel required.

Physical Requirements

Use hands to handle tools and controls; reach with hands and arms; manual dexterity for data entry.

Talk and hear.

Frequently sit; occasionally stand, walk, climb, balance, crouch, crawl, stoop, and kneel.

Operate a vehicle to travel to job sites.

Lift and/or move up to 10 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally.

Operate safely in a construction environment; maintain close vision, distance vision, color vision, and depth perception.
