Responsibilities

Conduct sampling, testing, and examinations of food commodities in alignment with the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts.

Verify plant HACCP and SSOP responsibilities, performing basic mathematics and elementary statistical methods for testing and sampling procedures.

Develop written reports and orally convey findings, identifying abnormalities in products or production environments and recommending corrective actions.

Maintain effective personal contacts with a variety of individuals, including internal and external contacts related to food safety standards.

Provide temporary coverage at locations outside the official duty station and recommend refusal of exports as needed.

Work independently and perform routine assignments on a regular basis while ensuring conformance with established standards.

Eligibility and Qualifications

Must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date, including specialized experience and/or education.

Specialized experience: 52 weeks of relevant experience providing knowledge of the properties and characteristics of regulated food commodities or other products for human consumption. Examples may include roles such as consumer safety inspector, inspection aide, food inspector, public health inspector, quality inspection specialist, or similar positions that involve sampling, quality control, and sanitation.

Required experience levels by grade: GS‑05 (at least 52 weeks), GS‑07 (at least one year, independent duties), GS‑08 (advanced experience with Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, SSOP, HACCP, and statistical methods), GS‑09 (extra‑level responsibilities with independent decision‑making).

Applicants may submit volunteer experience from National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations. All qualifying experience will receive credit.
