Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Streets and Roads) Salary:

$22.226 per hour

(minimum). Eligible for overtime (non‑exempt) if applicable. Pay grade 516.

Eligible for Hazardous Duty Supplemental Pay ($90/month, $0.52c/hour) and CDL pay ($1.08/hour) upon hire.

General Description The purpose of this classification is to diagnose, repair, maintain, and operate a diverse fleet of heavy construction and road maintenance equipment used by the Division of Streets & Roads.

Minimum Requirements High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Two (2) years of related experience.

Essential Functions

Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and pneumatic systems on heavy equipment.

Perform preventive maintenance such as oil changes, lubrication, filter replacement, brake adjustments, and fluid checks.

Conduct on‑site repairs during field operations and provide emergency roadside support to minimize downtime.

Maintain detailed records of maintenance, repairs, and parts usage; report equipment status and recommend replacements or upgrades.

Operate heavy equipment as needed to test repairs and perform operational tasks, ensuring equipment functionality.

Perform related work as assigned.

Special License/Certification All certifications and licenses must be maintained as a condition of employment.

Valid Kentucky Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class B and a valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner’s Certificate in order to qualify.

Valid Kentucky Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) – Class A with Endorsement N‑Tank Vehicles within six months of employment. CDL holders are subject to FMCSA query prior to qualification.

Special Requirements Must be accessible to on‑call duty and be able to work weekends and holidays as assigned and during emergencies.

Positions are required to perform snow removal duties during weather emergencies.

Must be able to operate Urban County Government equipment and vehicles in a safe, prudent and responsible manner.

All positions require drug testing before employment and may require a post‑job offer physical as stated in Ordinances 21‑14(b), 22‑13 and 23‑16.
