Job Title OSHA Safety Officer I (S)

Job Summary An individual in this position inspects North Carolina workplaces for employee exposures to hazardous conditions, prepares written reports, and recommends citations when warranted by state safety laws. Travel is required for on‑site inspections of physical hazards, chemical exposures, and incidents such as complaints, referrals, follow‑ups, accidents, and fatalities, conducted in accordance with the North Carolina Field Information System (FIS) and the Field Operations Manual (FOM).

Responsibilities

Identify workplace hazards and potential hazards

Recommend citations for alleged violations and make appropriate referrals

Inspect a variety of establishments and perform safety and health hazard assessments

Evaluate employers’ hazard abatement efforts

Prepare investigative reports on fatalities, accidents, and complaints as required by the Occupational Safety and Health Act

Document findings and maintain accurate database records

Communicate with complainants, employers, state and local agencies, and NCDOL personnel

Qualifications

Strong knowledge of industrial engineering principles and OSHNC standards

Self‑motivated, with excellent time management and database management skills

Physical, mental, and emotional capability to conduct independent inspections

Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including prosecution‑ready report writing and word‑processing proficiency (WordPerfect, Microsoft Word)

Valid driver’s license and a commute of no more than 50 miles to the Raleigh OSHA field office

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

OSHA Safety Officer I (SCOI): Bachelor's degree in occupational safety, industrial management, industrial engineering, or a related field *and* two years of experience in occupational safety and health inspections; OR Associate’s degree and four years of experience; OR equivalent education/experience combination.

Safety Compliance Officer Trainee (SCO Trainee): Bachelor's degree in occupational safety/industrial management/industrial engineering or related field *or* Associate’s degree and two years of experience; OR equivalent education/experience combination.

Applicants currently enrolled in a bachelor’s or master’s program may be considered if the degree will be completed before the first day of employment.

Compensation SCO Trainee: $55,823 · SCOI: $61,000 (base salary). The compensation is based on relevant competencies, knowledge, skills, and internal equity.
