Position Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

Department: Operations

Division: 2

Report to: Road Maintenance Supervisor

FLSA Status: Non‑Exempt

Location: 194286 US 271, Antlers, OK 74523

Note: Candidates selected may be required to complete a pre‑employment background check, drug screening and a Physical Abilities Demonstration.

Typical Functions

Operate heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, bulldozers, front‑end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi‑trailers and snow removal equipment.

Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.

Repair failures in roadway shoulders or bridge decks.

Repair and/or replace signs, posts, guardrails and fences.

Provide traffic control assistance using a stop/slow sign or flag.

Apply herbicide to highway rights‑of‑way.

Remove debris including tires, animal carcasses and spilled items.

Level Descriptor

Level I : Works under close supervision; operates and maintains power equipment; performs related unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks.

Level II : Performs skilled work; operates heavy equipment with full performance level; performs routine highway maintenance duties.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And Competencies

Level I : Knowledge of safe operation of heavy machinery; manual labor ability; maintenance and operation of power equipment; follows instructions.

Level II : Knowledge of operation and servicing of equipment; materials used in highway construction; proper traffic control during maintenance; ability to operate heavy equipment; communicate effectively.

Education And Experience

Level I : No education or experience requirements.

Level II : One year of experience operating heavy equipment.

Special Requirements

Possession of a valid Oklahoma driver’s license at the time of employment.

Some agencies require a valid Oklahoma commercial driver’s license, Class A or B, with appropriate endorsements.

Drivers for Oklahoma Department of Transportation or Turnpike Authority must obtain a CDL Class A within five months.

ODOT employees must have a CDL tank vehicle endorsement.

Applicants must pass a drug test prior to appointment.

Employees must be willing and able to perform job‑related travel, work hours outside regular shifts during emergencies and have a telephone at home for on‑call duty messages.

Employees regularly lift 80 pounds and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.

Vision requirements: close, distance, peripheral and depth perception.

Positions may be safety‑sensitive as defined by O.S. 63‑O.S. 427.8.
