Essential Job Functions And Major Tasks
Set up and operate conventional, special-purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate parts. May fit and assemble machined parts into complete units, applying knowledge of machine shop theory and procedures, shop mathematics, machinability of materials and layout techniques
Study blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications and sample parts to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations and setup requirements
Measure, mark, and scribe dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining
Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials on machines such as mills, lathes and grinders
Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media
Start and observe machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjust machine controls or control media as required
Verify conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using precision measuring instruments
Set-up and operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data
Fit and assemble parts into complete assembly using jigs, fixtures, surface plate, surface table, hand tools and power tools
May develop specifications from general description and create sketch of part or product to be fabricated
May confer with engineers, production personnel, programmers or others to resolve machining or assembly problems
Education And Experience
AA Degree in Machine Tool or a related field
Or, Four (4) or more year’s machine shop experience
Skills And Abilities
Good communication and organizational skills
Good general math and trigonometry skills
Knowledge of tool geometries and tool materials
Strong quality inspection skills
Strong reading, interpretation and application skills
General understanding of computer skills
Good teamwork skills and collaboration ability with engineeringAbility to read and troubleshoot programs
Strong ability to use measuring tools (i.e. Calipers and Micrometers, etc.)
Strong background in setup and operation of CNC mills and lathes needed to setup and operate multi-axis milling/turning centers
Capable of setting up and operating CNC turning equipment
Good blueprint reading skills, including experience/familiarity with geometric tolerance
Capable of setting up and accurately interpreting various inspection gauges
