Distinguishing Features of the Class Park Utility Workers perform a wide variety of laboring work in the city parks and are responsible for the operation of specialized landscaping or grass cutting equipment. Work involves general maintenance of parks, ball diamonds, golf courses, playgrounds, recreational facilities, and other buildings under department's jurisdiction. Incumbents perform minor maintenance work on the equipment and are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment. Immediate supervision is received from the Park Supervisor I. Supervision may be exercised over Laborers, Laborers I and II.

Examples of work (Illustration Only) Performs a wide variety of work involving the general maintenance of city parks, ball diamonds, golf courses, playgrounds, recreational facilities, and other buildings indoor and outdoor.

Operates a variety of specialized equipment as follows:

FWD Front End Loader (hi-lift) with Clam Bucket for removing debris and loading top soil and gravel onto trucks needed to maintain ball diamonds, parks, golf courses; with plow attachment for snow removal.

Interstate/F-10 Grass Cutting Tractors (hydraulic operated cutting mechanism) used on golf courses and in parks.

Front Loading Tractor with York Rake or Scrapper attachments for grading and preparing ball diamonds.

LCG Tractor with Mott Hammers or Bush Hog used for cutting grass on slopes or inclines.

Cushman – small grass cutting machine.

Tri-Cutter (Jacobson 5111).

Operates various tonnage of dump trucks to haul top soil or gravel and with plows for snow removal and various other vehicles related to the department.

Operates backhoe and small grader and Zamboni machine for cleaning ice surfaces at rinks.

Operates skyworker for trimming and removal of trees.

Operates various other equipment including, but not limited to, weedwhackers, lawn mowers, rotary drills.

Performs minor maintenance on equipment which includes daily checking of zerk fittings and grease when necessary, checking fuel and oil levels, etc.

Performs any task related to maintenance of vehicles/upkeep of garage.

Performs manual work in connection with the operation of specialized/regular equipment.

May be required to operate a snowplow during winter emergencies.

May assist in building maintenance at ice rinks, community centers, and other facilities including, but not limited to, restroom cleaning and snow.

May be trained in safety regulations related to the duties of the position.

Acts as crew chief on work crews when needed.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications PROMOTIONAL Continuous and permanent status in the Department of Public Works, Parks and Streets as a LABORER II for TWO YEARS, including or supplemented by SIX MONTHS of full-time experience in the operation of specialized landscaping/grass cutting equipment including Dump Truck and Hi-Lift with bucket (front-end loader).

NOTE: Official training certificates verifying the ability to operate the hi-lift with bucket (front-end loader) will be used to meet the experience requirement (on the hi-lift with bucket).

OPEN COMPETITIVE SIX MONTHS of on-the-job training in the operation of specialized landscaping/grass cutting equipment including Dump Truck and Hi-Lift with bucket (front-end loader). Training certificate must be submitted to the Civil Service office upon issuance.

NOTE: An official training certificate verifying the ability to operate the hi-lift with bucket (front-end loader) will be used to meet the experience requirement (on the hi-lift with bucket).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR BOTH PROMOTIONAL AND OPEN COMPETITIVE Applicants must possess a current CLASS A or B Commercial Drivers License issued by NYS Department of Motor Vehicles which must be presented at time of filing application and maintained during employment.

NOTE: Verifiable part-time experience will be pro-rated to meet the full-time experience requirement.
