Job Description / Tasks / Responsibilities

Responsible for field implementation of the Radiation Safety Program, ensuring compliance with company, local, state, and federal radiation safety policies and regulations.

Monitor radiological work controls and activities involving radioactive material.

Interpret and verify field data obtained from radiation surveys using appropriate instrumentation and/or analyses.

Participate in the safe collection, storage, packaging, transportation, and disposal of radioactive material.

Process routine incoming radioactive shipments, check for excessive contamination or dose levels, perform wipe tests, clean packages, and deliver shipments to approved users.

Record permit information for all radionuclides received and enter data into the HIS-20 database system.

Stay current on local, state, federal, and EnergySolutions policies and procedures concerning shipment/transportation of radioactive materials.

Collect, analyze, and interpret sample results to ensure compliance with regulations and standards; create reports and recommend corrective actions.

Conduct area surveys, respond to incidents or emergencies involving radionuclides, and maintain incident response equipment and supplies.

Perform calculations to determine radiation levels, contamination levels, and concentrations in various media and areas.

Issue radiological work permits and brief personnel on radiological conditions and work requirements.

Maintain data for a computer-based radiological work permit system, ensuring only authorized personnel have access to restricted areas.

Develop, write, and process radiation safety procedures, instructions, and guidance.

Operate, issue, and calibrate radiological counting and detection equipment and air sampling equipment.

Perform and document radiological instrumentation reviews, evaluations, and investigations.

Ensure proper operation and maintenance of radiological controls equipment; procure materials and equipment to support the program.

Participate in emergency preparation drills and emergency responses.

Provide training and implement monitoring programs to protect personnel from radiation hazards.

Investigate and document radiological occurrences and/or corrective action program issues; recommend long‑term corrective action.

Maintain field radiation protection records such as survey logs and radiation work permit entry/exit records.

May lead and direct the work of Radiation Safety Technician 1 and 2 staff, and provide their training.

Ensure Radiation Safety Technician 1 and 2 staff are qualified for their work and responsible for their safety performance.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements / Skills

Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Detailed knowledge of local, state, and federal radiation safety compliance regulations and their interpretation.

Detailed knowledge of radiation safety compliance principles and practices.

Skill in radiation monitoring instrumentation and methods.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and database applications.

Ability to schedule tasks assigned to other radiation safety technicians.

Ability to identify exposure levels, recognize trends, and develop radiation controls.

Ability to handle complex tasks and work across multiple subject areas.

Physical / Mental Requirements and Working Conditions

Lift, carry, push, pull up to 50 pounds; handle, grip, and reach above or below shoulder.

Use hands and feet for assigned tasks.

Sit, stand, walk, climb, bend/stoop, crouch, squat/kneel, twist at the waist, and balance.

Climb hand‑over‑hand on ladders, stairs, and scaffolds; work at elevated heights.

Effective communication in clear English (speaking, reading, understanding, writing, hearing).

Basic math and computer skills.

Perceive depth, adjust focus, and coordinate hand/eye movements.

Read small text, blueprints, documents, procedures, and instrument readouts.

Work inside offices, outdoors, and in extreme temperatures; handle hazardous machinery and slippery/uneven surfaces.

Wear protective equipment: goggles, hard hat, gloves, steel‑toe boots, and chemical‑resistant coveralls; respirator as needed.

Certified 24‑Hour Site‑Specific Hazwopper, Radworker, and Respiratory Physical (preferred).

Minimum Education, Experience, and Certification Requirements

High School diploma or GED.

Qualification as a technician in accordance with ANSI/ANS‑3.1 or equivalent, as approved by the RPM and/or RSO.

National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (preferred). NRRPT certification is a plus.

Minimum 5 years of experience as a radiation safety technician.
