About the opportunity The City of Asheville is seeking qualified applicants for the position of seasonal Parks Maintenance Worker for weekend support in the Parks & Recreation department. Parks Maintenance Workers get the opportunity to spend time outside in the City’s 72 parks and miles of greenway! Work is variable and can include mowing, weedeating, ensuring athletic fields are ready for games, bathroom custodial services, trash collection, etc.

Purpose of Classification The purpose of this classification is to perform routine grounds and building maintenance and custodial functions for the Parks and Recreation Department.

Distinguishing Characteristics This is a single level classification.

Other things to know Scheduling is incredibly flexible and the Parks and Recreation Department is able to work with candidates to create a schedule that works best for them including opportunities to work early mornings, afternoons, evenings to cover department weekend shifts.

Essential Functions Performs a variety of landscaping duties: mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; applies herbicides and pesticides; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; aerates and spreads grass seed; services irrigation systems; grooms and lines ball fields; and removes snow and ice, etc.

Performs maintenance and construction tasks for various parks, animal exhibits, and facilities: resurfaces and renovates playgrounds, fields and courts; paints buildings, equipment, and parking lots; installs, assembles, and/or repairs fences, playground equipment, and gates; repairs and patches walking paths; cleans gutters; digs post holes; and installs signs and fence posts, etc.

Performs light plumbing, electrical, masonry and carpentry repairs: replaces air and water filters; changes lightbulbs; wires lights; repairs small appliances; test emergency lights; repairs or replaces bathroom tiles; repairs, maintains, or replaces toilets, sinks, faucets, water fountains, etc.; clears blocked drains; repairs animal shelters and water bowls; repairs and replaces electric fences, gates, and related components, etc.

Performs general custodial duties at various parks, animal exhibits, and facilities: cleans parks, ball fields, restrooms, kitchens, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and other areas; vacuums carpets; hoses decks; scrubs and waxes floors; dusts; washes windows; empties trash; and sets ups and tears down staging, chairs, tables, bleachers, etc. for meetings, classes, tournaments, and events.

Maintains inventory of equipment, parts and supplies: gathers supplies and equipment to complete work assignments; loads and unloads equipment, parts, and supplies; transports supplies to and from work site; initiates orders for materials and equipment needed; and maintains related documentation.

Operates or uses a City-owned vehicle, and various equipment, power tools, hand tools, and supplies in order to complete work assignments such as lawn mower, weed eater, blowers, tillers, bobcat, tractor, dump truck, wheel barrel, jack hammer, sledge hammer, saws, chippers, backhoes, forklift, welding equipment, saws, drills, and other power or motorized equipment.

Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep machinery, equipment and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, washing/cleaning equipment, and cleaning shop and work areas: monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment to supervisor.

Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives, reviews, prepares, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate various forms, reports, correspondence, HVAC check up list, ire Extinguisher list, vehicle and equipment maintenance logs, purchasing card reports, materials lists, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

Additional Functions Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of work experience that shows an ability to maintain steady employment in any field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required Must possess and maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all City or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

ADA Compliance Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.

Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, temperature and noise extremes, heights, confined spaces, electric currents, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, animal/wildlife attacks, animal/human bites, water hazards, toxic agents, disease, pathogenic substances, or rude/irate customers.
