Work You Will Do Equipment Operator – District One / District Construction / Manatee Operations Center. This position plays a crucial role in maintaining our roadways. The incumbent will operate small to medium equipment and vehicles, use a variety of hand tools, repair/replace signs and trim trees. This position will perform Temporary Traffic Control in work zones and road closures.

Where You Will Work Manatee Operations Center – 14000 SR 64 East
Annual Salary Range $38,581.03 - $49,928.39
Your Specific Responsibilities Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated and assists in the repairs of this equipment; checks and adds fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc. Cleans and washes equipment. After obtaining the required Instructional CDL permit or license, operates vehicles and a variety of small and medium equipment that may include, but not limited to; dump truck, front end loader, skid steer loader, grader, lift equipment, small bulldozer and asphalt repair truck while performing bridge and roadway maintenance.
Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electric tools to maintain bridges and roadways. Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments with minimal supervision.
Performs tree trimming, rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic). Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:
Mathematical calculations; standard safety rules and procedures.
Skills in:
Operating a variety of hand and power tools; operating and performing minor maintenance on small/medium equipment and vehicles.
Ability to:
Operate heavy equipment; read and understand job‑related materials and fill out reports and forms; maintain and repair highways, bridges and other highway structures; communicate verbally and in writing; develop and maintain effective working relationships with others; lift, carry, handle up to 50 pounds; stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend frequently; work outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains and at heights; work independently; stand for extended periods.
Other Job‑Related Requirements Must respond to emergencies and be “on‑call” (24‑hour duty) when necessary. Must possess a valid Class "E" driver’s license and obtain a Class "B" CDL Instructional Permit within 60 days, and a CDL Class "B" with air brakes within 10 months. Must be ready to operate a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) while on duty. Must obtain and maintain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year. Must work with or around Department of Corrections inmates and be responsive to emergency situations within a short timeframe.
Minimum Qualifications Requires one year of experience operating small/medium equipment and vehicles. A Class E driver’s license at time of hire. CDL Class B License Instructional Permit within 60 days, CDL Class B with air brakes within 10 months. Valid Class E driver license acceptable driving record as per Department policy.
Driving Record Requirements Three or more moving violations in past three years; any two convictions of reckless driving; suspension or revocation for moving violations; or suspension for refusal to take sobriety test, or DUI conviction in past four years.
Driver’s License and Compliance Applicant must register with FMCSA Clearinghouse as required and undergo mandatory drug screening.
