Grounds Maintenance Worker – Turf & Landscape Division

The City is currently seeking a dependable and motivated

Grounds

Maintenance Worker

to join our

Turf and Landscape Division . This position performs semi-skilled and skilled labor to help maintain City grounds, parks, and landscaped areas.

This role works under the direct supervision of a supervisor or Lead Maintenance Worker and is evaluated periodically for performance.

Schedule

Monday – Friday | 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Weekend work available on a voluntary basis

Functions

Operates the riding mower, and smaller mowers, saws, edger, weedeater, blower, and smaller power tools.

Performs work and restores properties to best possible condition after sub-grade repairs.

Removes weeds and debris from working areas, public lands, rights-of-way, and other areas.

Does regular and routine maintenance, cleaning, repairs and servicing of equipment used on the job; reports major equipment problems to the equipment maintenance supervisor, and delivers equipment for repair.

Works on a call-out basis in response to emergencies such as special events, natural disasters, leaks, equipment failures, and other emergency calls.

May need to work on weekends.

Answers citizen and agency representative inquiries when approached on the job; provides information on the nature of the work and schedule; refers more complex questions to the supervisor.

Performs other duties as necessary.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or Completion of GED

Experience in building or grounds maintenance

Maintenance of a current/valid State of Florida Driver License which meets requirements outlined in the City’s Personnel Rules and Regulations Manual as well as any requirements by the City’s insurance carrier (at no additional cost, or risk), and determined by the City to be an acceptable driving record history

Able to communicate effectively in common English

Physical Requirements

Ability to frequently (3-5 hours per day) walk, run, climb hills and ladders, stoop, crouch, bend, pull, push, kneel, crawl or lift whatever way is required to perform the job.

Ability to frequently (3-5 hours per day) lift up to 50 pounds of weight to waist and/or head level.

Ability to learn the operation of light truck, tractors and other equipment if assigned.

Ability to frequently (>3 hours per day) perform heavy manual labor.

Requirements

Knowledge of the standard methods, materials, and tools used in the field.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skill in the use of mowers, edgers, weed eaters, blowers, trimmers, lobbers, saws and other standard tools and equipment of the work.

Some knowledge of the tools and equipment used in general maintenance work.

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to laboring work.

Knowledge in types of turf, plants and trees needed to properly maintain them.

Mathematics Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Language Ability Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Reasoning Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Work Environment Ability to physically work in extreme heat and extreme cold. Able to tolerate and/or work with insects, reptiles, fowl, and/or mammals, frequently (3-5 hours per day), and excessive noises.
