Responsibilities Responsible for managing the catalog of materials at a library, inputs data about materials into electronic catalog to ensure users can locate books, serials, films or other materials. Prepares bibliographic and item records for books, magazines and other library material. Advises, trains and assists end users and fellow employees on system operations and usage. Updates documentation manuals with new procedures and modifications to existing procedure.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Categorizes and classifies library materials including books, audio books, video, electronic resources, newspapers or other materials.

Follows library policies and guidelines when classifying materials.

Considers rules of Anglo‑American Cataloging Rules, Library of Congress subject heading policies, GSAFD subject headings, Dewey Decimal Classification, MARC21, RDA and catalog materials in categories of advanced specialized backgrounds.

Ensures all material is up to date and can be retrieved conveniently using standardized methods.

Performs original and copy cataloging and adapts online records according to guidelines in all subject areas and languages.

Imports MARC records for Hoopla and Overdrive and other databases as requested; updates MARC and authority records.

Maintains periodical collection (claims missing issues, compiles information for yearly renewal order).

Input details about new material into library catalog.

Adjusts rules when a new type of material surfaces.

Consults with colleagues on improving cataloging process.

Determines appropriate treatments for series or multipart items.

Organizes materials according to highest priority.

Attends conferences and continuing education classes.

Develops and maintains parts of the catalog that pertain to collections under specific jurisdiction.

Serves on library committees.

Assists with weeding and deleting items.

Works alongside subject specialists.

Recalls library material to change branch designation or call number.

Assists at the library branches with staff shortages (shelving, discharge, work at circulation desk).

Ability to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and push or pull heavy objects.

Minimum Requirements PHYSICAL SKILLS:

Ability to lift and/or move up to 35 pounds and push or pull heavy objects. May use a handling device (dolly, cart, etc.) or work with another team member to lift and/or move excessively heavy objects. Requires frequent standing, walking, reaching and stooping. Ability to communicate effectively using verbal, written and visual communication.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or acceptable equivalency diploma and two (2) years' of experience in copy cataloging and classification of library material using Dewey Decimal classifications, Library of Congress (LC) subject headings, machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records, Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules 2r or RDA. Experience with computerized cataloging databases. Associate degree preferred.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:

Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
