Position Number: 11286551. Reporting to: Senior Vice President for Operations. Budget: $148 million operating, $34 million utility. Oversees approximately 340 employees.

Position Purpose The Vice President for Facilities (VP) is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic direction, planning, and execution of all aspects related to energy management, capital construction, and facilities maintenance across Dartmouth College. The VP collaborates with senior academic and administrative leaders, the Board of Trustees, and the broader institutional community to develop and implement a comprehensive strategic plan for energy, capital projects, and facilities management. The VP is accountable for staffing a strategically aligned facilities organization, managing the performance of 340 employees, and overseeing a $148 million annual operating budget.

Key Responsibilities

Lead the planning, design, and execution of all capital construction projects, ensuring alignment with institutional goals and budgetary targets.

Oversee the planning, design, and execution of energy management strategies, including the transition from steam to hot water and the implementation of distributed non‑combustion technologies.

Provide strategic guidance and advice to senior leadership and the Board of Trustees on capital investment priorities and sustainability initiatives.

Develop and execute a long‑term vision for sustainable facilities, including a $500 million program to reduce campus carbon emissions to net‑zero by 2050.

Build and lead a high‑performing, diverse team of facilities professionals and foster a culture of safety, inclusivity, and continuous improvement.

Prepare and present regular updates and reports to the SVP for Operations and the Board of Trustees regarding the status of energy, capital, and facilities initiatives.

Chair the Resources Committee of the Board, ensuring transparency and accountability for facilities investments.

Maintain regulatory compliance, monitor applicable laws, and proactively address emerging issues related to facilities, safety, and accessibility.

Champion sustainability and environmental stewardship across campus operations.

Serve as an institutional resource for the application and interpretation of facilities policies, cultivating coordinated relationships with all constituents.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Vice President for Operations.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree plus 6 or more years of experience, or a combination of education and experience in facilities management, energy management, or a related field.

Extensive leadership experience in energy management, capital projects, and facilities management within a higher‑education setting or a similarly complex organization.

Track record of implementing sustainability initiatives, including energy conservation, environmentally sensitive construction, and renovation projects.

Demonstrated success advising senior leadership and boards on strategic investments and resource optimization.

Experience creating and leading diverse and collaborative teams in challenging environments.

Exceptional strategic planning, project management, and communication skills.

Ability to engage respectfully with community members at all levels, including trustees, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and donors.

Undergraduate degree in engineering, facilities management, or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in design, architecture, engineering, business, public administration, planning, or related field.

Understanding of higher‑education operations and business models.

Experience working in a research university environment.

Experience working with unionized staff.
