TDOT Technical Coordinator 1 Full‑time position within the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) – Environment Division, Region Preconstruction Section.

Salary: $5,100.00 – $6,373.00 per month ($61,200.00 – $76,476.00 annually). Location: Knoxville, TN (Knox County); Davidson, Madison, Hamilton Counties.

Overview The Technical Coordinator 1 provides technical coordination for transportation projects, supporting design, analysis, sampling, testing, contracting, and safety activities. Work occurs in office, field, laboratory, and industrial sites, and may include driving long distances and working outdoors in extreme weather.

Responsibilities

Conduct research and develop project estimates and schedules.

Perform project documentation close‑outs and ensure invoicing accuracy.

Analyze data sets, develop reports, specifications, plans, and contract documents.

Review and approve progress reports; manage permit compliance.

Conduct field inspections, sample testing, and complex calculations.

Prepare traffic control and work zone safety plans per MUTCD.

Maintain clear communication with internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

Associate or bachelor’s degree in a related field plus 3 years of related technical experience, *or* high‑school graduation with 5 years of related technical experience.

Class D driver’s license required; Class A CDL with N endorsement (no code O restriction) may be required depending on the position.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Competencies

Knowledge of MUTCD, laboratory safety procedures, environmental procedures, and contract administration.

Skilled in report and form writing, objective decision‑making, and computer proficiency.

Excellent verbal and written communication, customer service, and teamwork.

Ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and maintain effective relationships.

Conditions of Employment

LD requirement for drug testing prior to employment (CDL positions). Additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.

Regular overtime, weekend, and night shifts as required.

Work outdoors in extreme weather, on uneven terrain, and in construction environments.

Carrying and operating equipment >25 pounds and driving long distances.

Personal protective equipment mandatory in field and laboratory settings.
