Job Summary The OB/GYN Laborist Role A is an in‑house position that ensures safe, high quality, evidence‑based obstetric care is provided and hospital resources are managed clinically. In sites with residents or medical students the role includes supervision and education. The primary provider is expected to be immediately available and present during the entirety of each shift, with 24‑hour in‑house call coverage in a high‑volume labor and delivery unit (>3,000 deliveries per year).
Essential Functions
Prevent maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality by ensuring that inpatient obstetric care meets or exceeds current standards.
Identify and remediate any clinical concern through collaboration with the obstetric care team, including medical students, nursing staff, resident OB‑GYNs or family medicine physicians, maternal‑fetal medicine fellows, advanced practice providers, and attending OB‑GYNs or family medicine physicians.
Manage unit resources in a clinically appropriate, need‑based way in collaboration with the charge nurse, prioritizing pending labor inductions and cesarean deliveries.
Provide on‑site, restricted obstetric care for patients who have had no prenatal care or who are unable to be present for emergent clinical situations.
Facilitate transfers from outside hospitals, accepting all medically appropriate transfers and managing transfer upon arrival.
Lead scheduled safety huddles and post‑event debriefing sessions.
Assist other OB‑GYN attendings, advanced practice providers, and resident physicians with second opinions for fetal heart rate interpretations, management of obstetric emergencies, surgical assistance with complicated or routine cesarean delivery and obstetrical laceration repair, and multifetal deliveries.
Supervise resident physicians in triage evaluation and management, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum management if residents are present.
Qualifications
Doctorate graduate of an approved medical college.
Licensed physician (MD) – State of Michigan, required upon hire.
Licensed osteopathic physician (DO) – State of Michigan, required upon hire.
DEA registration – State of Michigan, required upon hire.
