Job Summary The Respiratory Therapist ED will work in cooperation with Free Standing ED personnel and will be responsible for using practical knowledge and skills to work effectively with other staff of the NCH Healthcare System in the emergent/non‑urgent settings. This includes, but is not limited to, maintaining all department supplies, equipment and assisting with defined aspects of the emergency/urgent care of patients. This also includes all duties and responsibilities of a Licensed Respiratory Therapist as defined in Job Title 4764‑Respiratory Therapist’s Job Description. Additionally, the FSED Respiratory Therapist will assist in technical responsibilities to assist department team members, however, the delivery of Respiratory Care treatments and other modalities will be their primary responsibility.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities
Primary responsibility is to provide acute respiratory care services in a timely manner following departmental policies and procedures. Services include but are not limited to delivery of medications, lung expansion techniques, secretion mobilization modalities as well as invasive and noninvasive mechanical ventilation, arterial blood gas procurement and analysis, etc.
Ability to work as a Respiratory therapist independently and without supervision.
Provides defined aspects of care to ED patients, following physician/provider order.
Solicits chief complaint at triage, can perform a quick registration and is able to alert triage RN to a high acuity patient.
Inputs accurate data into the EKG machine prior to completing procedure and immediately presents review to the attending physician.
Initials all blood ETOH orders when drawn. Completes Urine Drug Screen forms and maintains change of custody of specimen. Collects specimens for legal drug screening, following Laboratory protocol.
Maintains and orders supplies and equipment, replenishing both on an ongoing basis throughout the assigned shift, in a fast‑effective manner.
Maintains clean examination rooms and safe work environment/equipment as evidenced by proper handling of contaminated supplies/equipment, i.e., emptying trash/linen bags in department as needed.
Collects, labels, and/or delivers urine, blook, sputum, and stool specimens to the lab, as directed, and utilizing universal precautions.
Applies orthopedic splints under direction of Physician/Provider and documents in EMR.
Applies or assists with the application of simple dressings, utilizing aseptic technique.
Assists the nursing staff with patient admission/discharge/transfers, and reports to the Helipad upon request of the charge nurse.
Accurately performs glucometer finger stick. Accurately performs ED POCT. Performs quality control on all waive tests.
Initiates Saline locks and performs venipuncture following hospital protocol.
Accesses Pyxis machine and removes IV fluids and biological to assist RN.
Properly fits patients for crutches and instructs gait training following in‑service by Physical Therapy.
Will assist with the application of restraints (posey jacket, limb restraints and papoose) and monitor patient accordingly to NCH Healthcare system protocol.
12 Lead EKG: utilizes accurate lead placement, acquires artifact free tracings.
Holter, event monitor, mobile telemetry and ambulatory blood pressure hook up: clean tracings/readings, patient education, and appropriate lead placement.
Time Management: completes all work within the shift and assists others as necessary.
Education, Experience And Qualifications
Must be a graduate of an accredited program of Respiratory Care
Minimum 2 years clinical respiratory care experience required.
Licensed by the State of Florida as a Respiratory Therapist (RT) required.
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) preferred.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association.
Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association are recommended but not required.
NRP IS highly recommended but not required.
Intermediate computer knowledge: Uses Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Windows.
